garrett or kkk turbo?

Featured Replies

hey guys :)

as far as i can see, the majority or fabias are fitted with kkk turbos with a few having garrett turbos as standard? is this correct?

how could i find out which mine has? :) the car had a new turbo fitted in june time would i have been lucky to possibly get a garret?

i was speaking to a remapper at torque tronix and he said the car would be good for 170 with the kkk and that if i wanted more i would need a garrett.

why is there the difference between the two and why do seat and skoda use the kkk with VW using the garrett?

many thanks, jordan

I'd imagine with Skoda (and Seat to a lesser extent) being the 'budget' brands of the VAG group, cost is a major factor in what turbo they use. The popular opinion on here is that Garrett manufactures better and more hard wearing turbos than KKK. The brand is stamped on the side of your turbocharger.

All Fabias are fitted with KKK turbos, the Octavia MK1s are fitted with Garretts (based on the PD100/130).

Generally depends on which way the outlet is facing although both can be clocked to fit one another.

No they aren't, replaced mine this year when the bearings and seals **** themselves and it had a Garrett gt1749 on, so I'm not so sure either that the Garrett option is necessarily any stonger/better! :'(

Ammended for tech1e :smirk:

Do you happen to know whether it was 1749V, 1749VA or 1749VB? If you haven't had the car from new, I suspect the one you blew wasn't the first for that car...

I have no idea, how do I tell? I think the one that died wasn't the first, when I bought it from ALS in Ely they did say(no proper evidence though) it had been replaced under warranty at 48000, which I assume would be a like for like type of replacement. When I replaced it this year, it had only done 65000 (so 17000 on a recon/new turbo!!!).

Also, when I was looking round various turbo reconditioners some actually quoted both Garrett and KKK, So I reckon they must've been supplied with both!

there should be a flat metal plate with the details etched into the turbo.

They come supplied with KKKs, it is not unheard of for skoda to replace with the Garrett equilivant!

It might be worth talking to the turbo guys on which Garrett they are on about the 'a' or the 'b' as that makes the difference between the 130 and the 150. (someone may correct me)

Yup. I'm far more inclined to believe the car was on its second turbo than Ross has made a mistake! As you say, -Vs were fitted to PD110s, -VAs to (other) PD130s, and -VBs to PD150s IIRC, so it's a pretty big difference!

Never seen a Garrett factory fitted on a Fabia as yet and been looking after them for what 7 years now, They dont seem to do a Garrett with the outlet in the Fabia/Polo or Ibiza fitment on the 130 engine.

Eh? Surely it's just a matter of rotating the housing? I was a bit sad  and took several pic's of both my old and new(recon'd) turbo, so I'll take a peak and see what it says.

Cheers folks

Just out of interest, what would be the cost of replacing the turbo with:

A) Stock KKK new.

B) Stock KKK refurb.

C) Garrett VA.

D) Garrett VB.

Presumably more power would be available if a PD150 was fitted.

Cheers.
