Which tyres to choose to replace originals

Featured Replies

Had a unrepairable punture on 2011 model year 1.2 TSI SE fitted with Dunlop SP Sport 01 225/50/17 94W tyres.

Found out that they are not easily available as a drive in and fit on the spot (1 day to get) and also they are pricy

for a NON RUN FLAT TYRE at £195 fitted (NON RUN FLAT are fitted to all SKODA cars according to my dealer).

Confusion abounds as to whether the original fitted are RUN or NON RUN FLAT as one tyre dealer informed

me than Dunlop SP Sport 01's are only made as RUN FLAT's (not so as subsequently established).

To get to the point ...I expected to pay in the region of £125 fitted.

Anybody know of a UK national tyre chain supplying at a better price?

Any recommendations for alternatives (good grip and good wear)?

I assume it will be cheaper to stick to the Dunlops and I assume if I have another puncture if I

change brands both tyres on the same axle will have to be same brand.

Any insurance implications on having 1 brand on one axle and another brand on the other axle?

They are non run flat tyres from the factory and should cost around £120 each online. Try getting a national chain to price match as this is what our local one offers.

Hi i had to have a new dunlop (small screw oooooh to near the side wall sir) national tyre firm started at £250 but could do it for £150 . managed to get one for £139 fitted from my local small garage rather give them my money than the nationals

Have a look at Blackcircles.com/co.uk as they seem to give good prices. I find out who they use as a local fitter and then see if he will undercut their price. Mine always does.

There are no insurance implications with mixing makes, it just isn't encouraged.

Checked Blackcircles.....Only RUN FLAT version of Dunlop SP Sport 01 listed at £199. with 5 day wait...

Lots of cheaper alternatives but hope to obtain a recommendation on this forum.

What is the best reddily available source for these Dunlops as I had to ring around to find a supplier

at any price (not a big volume tyre??).

Most suppliers I approached had none in stock (will try to get one with no

promise on delivery date).

One said 'on back order... with even Dunlop having no stock' (not sure if this is true).

Just a quick look found this on Mytyres, can recomend bought the Dunlop winter equivalent end of last month.

http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?details=Ordern&cart_id=16328746.110.6658&typ=R-153525&ranzahl=4&Breite=225&Herst=Dunlop&Quer=50&Felge=17&Speed=H&weiter=0&kategorie=6&Ang_pro_Seite=15&Transport=P&dsco=110&sowigan=So

Should only cost a tenner to fit and balance etc

Mentions 'with rim protection'....What does that mean??

Just a small lip that protudes slightly to help reduce kerbing to alloys.

Any recommendation for a drive in national tyre supplier who stocks the RARE Dunlops??

With the limitation on the spare wheel I often cannot wait for on-line delivery and the fitting centre is not that near!!

By the way the original tyres fitted do not have rim protection...No wonder they are difficult to find

with so many versions (RF, NON RF, WITH/WITHOUT RIM PROTECTION)

Just tried the dreaded Kwik fit but even they want 3 days notice!

Because they are Kwikfart!!

Where are you in the UK? There is a good indi near here (work in Ludlow) that might be able to help. Your location of "Great Britain" is a bit vague!

Maybe you could look around and find a nearly new one?

Having put all season tyres on our Yeti I sold the original dunlops off... yesterday.

And they had only done 800 miles!

You'll have to let us know how you get on with the all-seasons...

Reviews seem very mixed :thumbup::thumbdown:

Very impressed so far with the Vector 4 season Goodyears.

On the Dunlops my wife couldn't reverse the car off the drive in the snow/ice, so it went right back in the garage. 2wd DSG.

Now she is happily going in and out in the same conditions, plus having no problem getting round iced up back lanes and car parks.

Only trade off seems to be a slight increase in road noise so far. But it's only slight.

Of course it always come down to personal opinion though. :D

I'm glad we got them.

Depending on where you are but Elite have them in stock for £135 fitted or £129 posted (expect to pay around £10 for the tyre to be fitted, balanced etc)

Personally i would not go anywhere near a national 'fast fit' tyre/exhaust place - unless you like the gamble that your new alloys will be marked by the fitter!

I have used Elite about 6 times now, even with a 130 mile round trip drive, they are worth the effort for me as they have always been one of if not the cheapest around and their fitters are spot on

Done a bit of research online and the middle of the road price fitted seems to be about £135-£145 mark.

Kxxx..Fit seem to be the worst at £195 drive in, so will know better next time.

Even ATS quote £135 with £149 if you just drive in.

Hi-Q (Goodyear/Dunlop owned??) also a good source at around £145 fitted.

Will try them first if away from my local area with no access to internet.

I'll vouch for Elite. I've used them several times.

Only used them 'mail order' but tyres arrived next day if ordered in the morning and then I go to my local independent to get them fitted.
