Octavia Scout TDI - Tyre Question?

Featured Replies

I have a 6 month old Scout TDI which came with Dunlop SP Sport 01 225/50 R17 94W Standard Fit.

I have not been impressed with the Dunlops.

I am now starting to look for a new brand of tyre to fit the car when I need to replace the Dunlops espcailly as even with the easy right foot I have and the 8k the car has covered the front tyre wear indicators are coming up fast

I have looked at the site - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/ and noted the UNIROYAL RainSport 2 gets a thumbs up from users

Any thoughts from other Scout Ownersmuch appreciated -

as I need something that offers Grip ( good wet and dry handling - and if possible more than the Dunlops offer in the snow we have had here in South Wales ) also low wear and rolling resistance to help running costs.

Mainly running around A roads that look like B roads since all the frost and snow has blown holes in them and National Speed Limit Roads

I bought my Octavia second hand, and for some reason it had 4 different brands of ditchfinder on, once they had worn I replaced them with Toyo Proxies. They were recommended to me by a friend who also has an Octavia, and they had a good review from autocar. They are a very good tyre in the wet and dry - though like most tyres, pretty much useless on ice or snow. When I ordered them from my tyre fitter, he said they were a very grippy tyre, but didn't stock them because they wear quicker than Vredesteins.

When I needed the fronts replacing, I couldn't wait the few days to order them again as mine were nearly bald, so got Vredestein Centro, which are awful. I crashed in them on the first day of snow, so even though the Toyo's weren't great for snow, these were lethal. Sure it could have happened to any tyre, but these were rubbish in any weather.

Because of the crash, which destroyed a wheel and a tyre, I got a full set of Continental Winter Contact TS830 fitted. About £80 a corner fitted.

I have 16" wheels, and the Toyos for me were around £70 a corner fitted. The Vredesteins were about £75 a corner fitted.

I drive mainly B roads, about 20k a year. When I next need tyres, I'm going back to Toyo Proxies.

got the uniroyals on my scout (rear only at the moment) seem fine. rear end has not stepped out any more than would be expected in the hardpacked snow.

I got them for £122 each from blackcircles.com so not particularly cheap.

Plan to put another pair on the front when teh current falkens wear through.

good tread pattern as well :)

Mine came with Pirelli PZero Rossos all round, which I cant complain about...car is very sure footed on the A and B roads, in most conditions (they are pretty useless on hard packed snow when braking but then what summer tyre isnt)...I commute 100 miles a day on A and B roads.

Longevity wise, I'm up to 17k miles but collected the car with 4k on the clock so can't say for sure that the Pirellis have always been on it...still have 5mm on them anyway.

Conti SC3's are great.

Dunlops will sawtooth like no other - skoda recommend not using them, even though new cars come with them on !!!

My 2008 Scout is still on its original Dunlop SP Sports.

It's done 25,000 miles now.

No complaints at all.

Thanks for your replies

I will speak with the tyre centre I use as I have with your comments narrowed it down to either of the following

UNIROYAL RainSport 2 - this has had very good right ups in the german car press

Or

Continental Sport Contact 2 or 3 - if you go to the Continental site they suggest the 2 but the 2 as far as I can see has been replaced by the 3, both have had good press from he Which Tyre Test in 2009.

Interestingly or is it just me being sad, Uniroyal and Continental are the same company

Which one did you go for - I note the Conti 3's are only available with a V speed rating for the 94 load rating - and a 98 load rating with the W rating (instead of the OEM of 94W). Does this matter - and which is best? Are there any insurance implications?

I Have the Uniroyal Rainsport 2's on my Caddy its running 160hp and 240ft/ib of torque and absolutely love them!!

The confidence they give in the wet out weighs price and wear imo buy them!

Not too impressed with the Dunlops on my Scout. Quite a few Scout owners have tried the Goodyear 4 seasons with good results.

Run Barum Bravuris 2 on my Scout in the summer months, very please so far excellent grip in wet and on loose dirt of Alpine tracks. Seem to be wearing better than the Dunlops, which were indeed hopeless!

Winter I run Vredestein Snowtrac 3s on 16" steels ( they are simply fantastic).

Also run the Barum on my wifes Ibiza and have had excellent wear and even good performance in recent snow.

I have identified a potential tyre - good reviews so far seen - they are standard fit on the VW Tiguan ( which a friend of mine has - he is a true VW fan and was a bit mifted when he saw my Octavia Scout as he prefered it over his VW )

The Tyres in question are the Bridgestone Dueler HP Sport

Odd how VAG put tyres such as these on the Tiguan but not on Skoda's rough and ready Octavia Scout especially based on the official Skoda images for the Octavia Scout.

I always recommend Goodyear Optigrips for a Scout TDi . Have achieved 20K now and still plenty of tread available . Simply great in the wet and good on snow - they are only a 3 season tyre though .

We have had ours since May & covered 21000 miles, It has the original Dunlops & still with quite a lot of tread left. I consider Im a hard driver so for you to wear out a set in 8K I think you will have a shock if you fit softer grippier tyres as these will last even less time. I dont think overall the grip is that bad when balanced against the rate they are wearing. Ok the car can be made to break away but its always controlable & some wonderful roundabout drifts can be enjoyed

Any purpose made road tyre will be poor in snow & at temps below around 8 deg as the rubber becomes hard. Tyres which offer better winter grip not only have chunkier tread but are also a softer compound so will wear faster than a conventional road tyre. Winter tyres need deep tread, In Germany winter tyres are illegal with less than 4mm of tread.

Its really defining what you want & what your priorities are & I think you need to be kinder to them if you want the tyres to last, You dont have to go slower, just be smoother & check the pressures every 3-4 weeks max.

Steve

Did you run the std Dunlops & how did the wear compare between the 2 ?? You have achieved 20K on these but you may be a gentler driver than me :giggle:

Using Kuhmo's on mine, seem ok and were £91 a corner fitted....
