170hp TDI owners - question, please.

Featured Replies

I test drove a 140hp TDI 4x4 yesterday and while it was 'adequate', I would like a bit more poke. OK, so I am coming from a 210hp Golf GTI, but I also have a 140hp diesel Transit and the Yeti didn't really seem much nippier than that (although it was a lot quieter/more comfortable!!).

The 170hp upgrade is only about £650, but I have read that the engine is not as smooth as the 140hp... Comments?

Hogwash, smooth as silk.

The test vehicle may have been rather new, so not run in - it takes 10,000 miles for a complete run-in, and it gets smoother and more powerfull along the way.

Well, I've never driven the 140 Yeti so I can't make a comparison. My Manual gearbox 170 is run in with about 5000 miles on the clock. I find I can drive it very steadily, moving quickly up through the gears and it's smooth and quiet. If you give it some welly it responds with a kick in the back and you need to hang on to the steering wheel. It's a bit noisier then, but not much.

Buy a 170 and get it remapped by Shark Performance, that will get you close to the Golfemoticon-0140-rofl.gif

+ 1 to all the above.

+2

It's very smooth and the torque means you can make properly swift progress as long as you keep the turbo spinning, which isn't hard to do. I came to Yeti motoring from a series of sports cars and have never yet found myself bemoaning any relative lack of oomph.

The throttle is smooth and responsive too, making the (170) Yeti a lot more fun to drive than it really has any right to be; it's noticeably quicker than the 1.8TSI I test-drove too.

You can take a smug satisfaction, too, that your Yeti will outperform any of the countless 2.0 TDI Audi A4s that seem now to be the car of choice for the brainless motorway tailgater; even if his has the 170 engine, it's got a lot more weight to haul behind it. (Apologies to any A4 owners innocent of this behaviour.)

Plus the Audi is geared for a higher speed, so you have more torque to the 4 wheels all through the range than the Audi has to the two B) . Add a little water on the road, and there is a real difference - in favour of the SM of course.

I was in a similar situation to yourself TheFrog, having downsized engine wise from a R32 (so 240bhp).

Found it(and still do) quite frustrating not having the power on tap ,unfortunately that is the compromise from power and low fuel economy to slow and high fueleconomy.

I'm driving an Audi A5 2.0L TDI at present that has the same CR170 engine as the Yeti.

Honestly, it is smooth, quiet (perhaps due to Audi's noise suppression), pulls strongly with a relatively flat torque curve, and turbine like, all the way to 4,500-5,000rpm (the CR140 runs out at about 4,250rpm). It is almost petrol like as an engine to drive, but thankfully not quite. It is though, in the A5, saddled with about 200kg more weight than in a Yeti/Octavia and taller gearing; so feels a degree less responsive.

I used to have an Octavia vRS with the PD170 engine. It wasn't quite as linear, it had a peakier torque curve, as the CR170 and slightly nosier, more gruff, but it made the vRS a hoot to drive.

I test drove the CR140 Yeti manual and, as you have, found it OK; but somewhat lacking compared to the vRS (GTi).

I would have bought the CR170 Yeti if it wasn't for the fact that I need to move onto an automatic gearbox, which Skoda in their wisdom only put with the CR140.

Nice suggestion, except that MrFrog would appear to live, as his name suggests, in France. :giggle: Might be a bit of a trip to Mansfield. Worth it though if he does. B)

to slow and high fueleconomy.

Carisbrook, do you really mean the 170 is slow? I haven't got mine yet and admittedly against a 240bhp R32 there will be a noticeable difference but the one thing I would not call the 170 is slow (having test driven). :'(

I came to the 170D 4x4 from a 230HP Megane R26 with LSD. I don't regret for one minute gaining the additional 15 MPG, the confidence that I can get about in the snow and the loss of the bone jarring trials of potholed roads. And 0-60 in 6 seconds or 8 point something seconds is irrelevant for real overtaking. :)

not with all the mid range the CR170 has, probably ooooodles more than a R26 or R32. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Definitely not slow. OK could do with more go, but for what it is (170 Elegance) I find it fast and frugal and fun. Last car 140 Octy 4X4. I found the power band width a bit wider on the 140, seems a bit narrower on the 170 Yeti but she has very long legs and I find it kinda fun when you get the change from third to fourth right and she just takes off and the revs keep coming. NO not slow and keep getting around 50+ and a lot more using cruise control. Have faith go for the 170.

I don't need to add my tuppence as it's already been said. Had a 140 and now got a 170. The 140 is ok but the 170 is in another world.

I have a CR140 DSG. I have a remap and insurance all paid for, just need to arrange a date....... should give me around 185bhp & 390Nm. ( and improved fuel economy), so in theory, it should be at least as quick, if not quicker than a standard CR170emoticon-0140-rofl.gif.

I can't wait.

this re-map thing seems to be the in thing at the moment.spoke to a garage that does re-maps and he said the fuel increase will be minor, maybe about 2/3 mpg at the most.is it worth the outlay for this??also said he THINKS its not available YET for my yeti as the ecu is locked!!

Thats right. It is locked. Ben at Shark Performance removes it, does his hocus pocus and replaces it. That is the only way you can deal with these ones - take a look at his website which explains it all. He doesn't chase you for your business, but will take it if you give it to him. He has only good reviews that I can find anywhere. He will give you advice and let you decide where you want to go.

All this talk of 170, 230 etc. is making my down sizing to a 110 very pedestrian :giggle: mind it will be an improvement on the current 54 I get ot my son's Fabia :D

Anyway by the sounds of it your best of with the 170

You and I are getting our CR140s mapped because, as we have the DSG gearbox, there is no other way to having c. 170-175bhp.

The OP has a free choice as, it would seem, he is happy (as several others are) with a manual gearbox.

On the other hand I am looking forward to being able to do instant gear changes and playing with the tiptronic function; so maybe this would be of interest to the OP.

No complaints after 14000 miles from my CR170. After a Fabia vRS PD130 (remapped) it is a very smooth engine but I only drove a CR140 briefly so can't reall offer a decent comparison. Averages (mostly short, ie 20 mile journeys to and fro work with a few longer distance runs) about 42mpg calculated (2 or 3 more on the Maxidot). No remap needed....emoticon-0145-shake.gif.

IIRC there's now an updated CR170 under the bonnet from what I have, not sure what the differences are.

No complaints here the CR 170 is great.

I had a 123d / 204bhp shortly before the Yeti, I don't feel compromised in any way.

Of course the yeti 170 is obviously going to be slower, as i accept dropping 70 horses is going to have an effect even with the heavy V6 lump in the front of the golf.

Perhaps I was expecting to much but as a overall package i'm very happy and as others have said and done a remap would bring it over the 200 mark easily.

Ha!

Slow? Not likely. The Skoda Yeti 170 is as rapid as what would at one time have been referred to as a "hot hatch"!!

Not only that, it handles infinitely better than many so-called GTIs. And compared with two VW Toerags it certainly is much more satisfying - as in two separate toerags!!

A tall go-cart, that's what a 170 is! **** off a shovel fast. Corners on rails. Stops on a pfennig...

Anything else? Yep, pretty economical, spacious, versatile, warm, cool, comfy, idiosyncratic, rare, and so on and on and on and on....

Just go order one, yeah? And stop wasting our time here with dumb quessies!!!!!
