Very disturbing drone/grinding......

Featured Replies

First off, Hope everyone had a great Christmas.

I am really baffled.

Before xmas all was fine till the bitter cold came when on the way home from Avonmouth I noticed a drone from the passengers side front corner. I left it to develop for a day or so as it certainly wasnt there on the way to Avonmouth.

Over the next and it actually got worse. There was nothing to hear below 45mph and above that you could hear the drone that got louder over time. I took it in to get the bearing sorted as they said it was that making the noise after taking it for a test drive. They sorted the bearing out ok and also fitted some new ball joints for me. I took it in for a wheel alignment straight away. and on the way there I noticed that the noise had gone but did notice a very slight grind/drone like I heard before just not as loud around 30 mph.

due to having to go out I used that car and over time the noise has got worse but only between 25-40 mph. doesnt get worse or better when you turn. makes the noise if its in gear or not, accel or decel. kind of gets worse randomly tho.

before it was obvious that the drone was coming from the side but now it sounds like its in the middle of the engine bay behind the radio area.

I am worried its something to do with the gearbox?

Ill be looking at all the drive shafts adn CVs tomoz to chack for play. I am lost.

Most likely that the other wheel bearing has also gone :(

I really hope so. should be able to tell tomoz when its up on the stands.

fingers crossed.

could also be the diff starting to collapse sounds very much like what mine did when it collapsed on my old vrs

got to say it does sound diff related to me

fingers crossed its only the wheel bearing buddy

I was thinking that, really hope its not tho, why would it only make this noise at certain speeds tho?

My car has never been tracked or ragged, pretty much drive like miss daisy as the GF puts it

She is on 91k now mostly motorways. Isn't that a bit young for the diff to go?

What would cause it to go?

Is it a simple fix? Ie box out and get someone to fit an lsd? Would that sort it lol

What was the milage on yours mate? And did you drive it like it should be driven lol, hard?

with the diff there isnt a set time when they fail ive seen them fail on a 40k box but on the other hand you have taxi's running 300k+ not had an issue

i hope its just something small and not diff, the reason it goes is the rivets fail on the diff as they are pants lol

best option if it was this is buy a second box ( about £100) fit it yourself really easy to do

Does sound EXACTLY like my last Octavia TDI where the diff packed up.

right,

first off, where is the diff? s it the bit the drive shafts go in to?

ok, First ill say I dont recommend doing what I am about to say.

I jacked the car up and put it on stands,

then I started the car and put it in gear 5th as the tickover is around 20+mph. While it was doing that the wheels were spinning and I could hear the same sounds. I was deff coming from the gear box area but was hard to pinpoint due to the engine.

I then turned it off and left it in gear.

I then checked for play in the CV joints. all 4 of them were ok. no play in them.

while still in gear I rotated one wheel to notice some slight play between me turning one wheel and the other reacting in the opposite direction.

I then rocked the one wheel to hear a really bad clunking in the gear box, sounds like loose spanners in there. you can feel a slight clunking on the gear box case too. it happens when you change direction from fwds to back. just rocking the wheel by maybe 30 deg max. sound is louder when in gear but is slightly there when in neutral.

it sounds like its between the VW plate and the part out the back that the shafts go in to.

hope this paints a bigger picture?

cheers

billy

deffo sounds like your diff is fecked

1 or more of the rivets sounds like they have failed

p.s im up your way on sat 15th cf3 5e*

Cheers clive, all being well I should be able to get another car as I need one to go to work on Tuesday.

then this can take a back seat for a month or 2.

I know were that is, tis bout 10 mile from me.

I take it if I use it, pritty soon it will fail and Ill just have no drive? or will it do a bit more seriouse damage?

can you pm me a link to that mate?

cheers

the problem is when it goes bang it will go big time lol usually throught he casing lol

here is the link http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=347106

will take about 2 hours to fit on stands i have the spline set for the shafts you can borrow etc etc

im going to aiming to be at the bloke house for 11am sat

I ran my 53 plate vrs for 20k with a noise from the box & it didnt get any worse,i replaced both front wheel bearings & the gearbox oil & it made no difference to the noise,i traded the car in with the noise at 125k. As clive says replacement with a good sechondhand box is probably best.

p.s im up your way on sat 15th cf3 5e*

There goes the neighbourhood lol

Billy if you get stuck for fitting let me know as I'm sure I point you in the right direction of someone with the right gear :)

yea lol, gonna get noisy round here then.

Clive I cant reply to that tread, cant PM him either. Ive left a not in his profile so I shall see. with the box off is there a way to see if its got a similar fault? I dont fancy buying another box that has got a problem on it too.

Cheers Dave, might be the best bet to get it up to your mate.

Would it be possible some time to reset my servicing again? I am in the process of doing it now but with it being lame she wont be going anywhere so no real rush.

cheers

If you get another box, why not get someone to fit a diff repair kit before you put the box in the car?

I presume that there is a bolt kit to replace the rivets available from the Stealers like there used to be for the old Golf GTI diffs?

mmm, If I get another box for it, can it be taken apart yourself?

would it be ok to have a go at doing it myself? or will it need special tools?

What was the milage on yours mate? And did you drive it like it should be driven lol, hard?

My Old vrs was Ex police so it hard a hard life before i bought it i bought it with 96k on it on an 03 plate 103k when i replaced it :S replaced it with a box from an audi a3 turbo ;) only difference was the spline hubs on the box were smaller bolts than the vrs ones(bolts that bolt the drive shafts on) so had to swap them across but i can't say i drove it overly hard calmed down as i've got older don't get me wrong a good burst on the banjo put's a smile on your face when the boost comes in :p but there's being safe and being silly.....

heres a link to a site i found while looking for a replacement (seeing what box would fit from what 1.8t car audi vw etc)

Gear oil what went in was clear as shown. Genuine VW stuff from TPS. The didrty stuff next to it is what came out after 6 month or so. The stuff that came out when I did the first change back in the middle of the year was even worse and looked like used engione oil.

When I changed it I put in 1.8 - 1.9 l of the stuff and only a small amount overfload. I did get about 1.9l back out too.

IMG00036-20101231-1729.jpg

This next ones is a bit baffling, This bit here is where the noise is coming from, I have also noticed a leak on the one side. However I got out pritty much what I put in, I have jsut taken out the old stuff and replaced it with the castrol SMX-S 75w85 which is more of a honey colour.

How come the gearbox oil is getting so dirty?

Drivers side:

IMG00038-20101231-1847.jpg

Passengers side:

IMG00040-20101231-1848.jpg

One last thing, I noticed while under the car was this pipe looked to be leaking? it is the same pipe that winds near the gearbox filler hole. this part is behind the box going down somewhere.

IMG00041-20101231-1849.jpg

Now for a small Vid to show the sounds its making.

For the first few seconds its in neutral, and I am slowly rotating the passengers side wheel about 90 deg one way then other.

You will then hear me go in and put the car in to gear and then do the same again.(it makes same sounds in all gears between 3rd and 5th as its hard to move in 2nd and 1st so dint bother)

after a few more seconds of taht you notice a ticking sound and the crunch, this is me still doing about 90 deg one way then other. toward the end you only hear the ticking, this is me rotating the wheel anti clockwise to simulate the car moving fwds.

Not normal I dont think. all these sounds are from the part pictured above or just in the main box area.

cheers for that,

in that there is 2 EHA boxes? which is ours? also how accurate are these as Ive looked on another site that has slightly diff numbers.

EHA 3.300 1.944 1.308 1.029 0.837 3.824 1.8T (AWP 180bhp)

EHA, 3.300 1.944 1.308 1.034 0.838 3.647 2002-2007 4cyl

The box I am looking at is a CZM 3.300 1.944 1.308 1.029 0.837 4.235 2.0L Beetle '98

cheers

billy

I would just get the diff repaired. No point fitting another box if that is on its way out....
