sorry folks, im a bit of a novice when it come to practical mechanics ive always been more of a driver but hope to try and learn more and do more myself, this may sound obvious but i haven't a clue, ive been looking at different induction kits for my '02 octavia vrs and have been studying the standard air box set up, when it comes to replacement what happens to the small 1" diameter pipe which goes under neath the large 3 1/2" daimater pipe into the standard air box when the induction kit is fitted, do these both plumb into the induction kit too along with the sensor and wiring?

The concensus is mate stick with a panel filter if you want to upgrade - keep the airbox where it is.

mine has a carbonio fitted was like that when i bought it from hightower on here no complaints so far and i've always stuck with panel filters in the past

also most decent induction kits come with fitting instructions :thumbup:

£200 or £30 for a panel filter and some tubing :)

With the saving your more than halfway to a remap or something better.

On my induction kit there's a feed for it tho the standard air box is ment to be better the extra noise is addictive

I now have one of the jabba kit and love it i must say :)

Im def for :) the noise is great, and i trust jabba with no doubt

You tend to get a small mini filter that goes on the lower pipe mate, then the big old filter goes to the maf, iirc i think the little one is something to do with cold starting ??? Unless of course i imagined being told that lol

The little pipe to the airbox is for the secondary air system. Some aftermarket inductions kits come with a small filter for it and some come with an adaptor so it fits to the induction kits intake pipe.

I've had an induction kit fitted and now run a panel filter in a modified airbox and while the noise of the ind kit is addictive my airbox isn't that much quieter and I would go as far to say the car picks up better now :thumbup:

I had a ABD induction kit. These come with either 2 filters like mine:

One that fits the end of the pipe going into the airbox(from the secondary air system)

I do miss the sound of those kit's, as I now have the std airbox modded (definned and with extra 3" feed)

ditto tuck the oil breather in front of the battery,where i stuck mine it fowled the gear change,pain in the ass to fit,battery out,battery tray, and front light and indicator lense,my first attempt,took about hour,plus no intructions,defo recommend one thou mate.

I had a Generic Induction kit on for about 2 days. Sounded terrible. Heat soak was the worst thing though. I would imagine a proper CAI would be OK and sound better too. I stuck my Pipercross panel filter back into the standard box in the end.

BOWDERS1 - Did the de-finning and pipework make any noticeable difference to sound/performance? How difficult was it to find the correct piece of pipe and to feed it through the wing?

I run a modified airbox like mark (bowders1) and there is a noise increase over standard due to the airbox being drilled although not quite as loud as a CAI.

For the pipe type "76mm neoprene cold air feed" into eBay and it'll bring it up for ya.

Mark has done a "how to" guide in the octavia technical section on the airbox 3" pipe mod but I'm on me phone so can't put a link up.

As for performance wise I'm not sure what gains it will give but I find it picks up better with the airbox on rather than with an induction kit but it's personal preference I guess :thumbup:

I would say the pipework is the most important, as the std airbox is ok but restrictive due to how the air gets into it. If you improve the air to the box then there should be a benefit.

Definning has mixed results from people. I did the definning first, along with a few added holes(not engine side of airbox)

Definning and modding made airbox sounded nice, performance results not that noticable. But when I did the extra pipping i did find the performance through the rev range pick up slightly better than the CAI kit.

Getting pipework is easy , any 3" pipework. Think SIVRS posted a link to ebay in the diy guide i did. :thumbup:

Getting cheap cone filters to bolt staright to the MAF is the worst option as heat soak will be the problem.

The ABD CAI kit and any CAI with a good filter which sits low out of the engine bay heat (behind bumper) work well and great addictive noise.

I think I give airbox mod with pipping the slight edge over the CAI though(IMHO) and the sound is not too bad on that either.

It is a subjective debate....

Whats defined as the engine bay side? Because you have yours in the bottom on the left of the box and that to me looks like its close tot he engine bay side? Or does it means holes in the main wall of the box facing the engine?

It means that the holes are on the underside facing downwards towards the gearbox and not on the side facing wall facing the engine.

I get no heat soak in that airbox and it is much better than a CAI IMO.

I have a cold air one cost me £40 to make you can buy the piping and make it your self....Mine goes in front bumper so gets cold air all the time and make a huge difference to the car......Can hook you up with stuff if you like

Just finished this upgrade. £5 intotal and 4 hours of my time (mainly thanks to dad telling me not todo it like that, even though I was doing it right).

Overall it feels quicker/more responsive and has a very minimal increase of noise. TBH I feel that might be done to the location of my holes.
