Is this the same as a roll cage?

Isnt a show cage just a roll cage that has been blinged up?

I looked into getting a rollcage put into my Polo track car that i'm in the middle of. Found a proper 6 point cage that would have sections welded to the floor for the mount points then the cage would be bolted (and probahbly welded too) to the mounts on the floor. Insurance company said they would put my annual insurance up from £230 to £580 if I fitted a rollcage!

I wouldn't bother, only any point doing it on a full on track machine, bit pointless in a daily derv.

Besides, you were only just on about trying to lighten the thing up, you ain't gunner do that by welding 50kg of steel in the back of it... :p

As far as I know a show cage is a roll cage but is pretty useless if the car was to roll, so it has the looks but

Doesn't really function. That's my understanding anyway!

Correct.

Show cages are worse than useless, they infact make your car more unsafe.

Not only do they present a hazzard for your head in an accident they also fold up nicely to become skewers.

I had to take the cage out of my golf as i couldn't find an insurance company that would even quote me with it in!!!! ( not a show cage tho, a full fia spec safety devices cage)

why do they fit them in rally cars then?

Different construction/materials and fixing I believe. Show ones are the cage version of the fake carbon fibre in a way. Look the part, but none of the benefits as they're not as strong or fixed in in the same ways.

why do they fit them in rally cars then?

coz in rally cars they are rollcages not show cages

I don't want to do it I was just curious.

A show cage can be quite good too but only fits in the back of the car and around the rear seats etc.

Cage

someone do it!!

Im surprised Devon hasnt done it yet!!

Just make a show cage out of PVC gutter piping lol..

theres a mk4 ibiza one on ebay at the mo cheap, wonder if thatll fit?

Any additional metalwork lurking around the noggin (head) area is a very bad idea in a road car. Rally car or track day special with buckets, harnesses and mandatory helmets, yes. Road car used to commute or fetch groceries, no! Too much risk of causing serious injuries in an accident. 3 normal 3 point belt won't keep you secure and no helmet means it'll hurt when you bash your head on it.

Anyways, Fabias crash upside-down, or so I've heard. Better, surely to have show scatter cushions attached to the headlining? ;)

J.

I would assume a roll cage function is to stiffen up the body and not let it deform when in an accident. I assume thats why insurance companies are a bit iffy about it..?

Ah sorry, I thought it was the same thing but with different names....show cages would seem pointless in my eyes, a roll cage however would not.

Glad you replied Danny before I got to quoting you!

Showcages are awesome, I think everyone who wants one, should get one. Then crash.
