Trim levels

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Im looking at buying a MK1 Superb TDi its a classic in spec. I know it would be lower spec than an elegance but what would the differences be??

Also i read on the net somewhere that only the elegance came in a 1.9 130 power out put? Is this true or did the Classic also come in 1.9 130?

Is there anything to watch out for on these. Is got 145000kms on the clock with would be approx 85-90,000 miles.

Dave

The Classic will have steel wheels and wheel trims and no cruise control

The comfort gains alloys and cruise control and MFSW

The Elegance gains electric leather interior (with proper lumbar support) and xenons.

Im sure there will be other differences but they are the main difference from memory, no doubt others will chip in to add to the list, they are all available with the 1.9 PD130 (AWX) engine, the BIGGEST thing that will affect ALL MKI Superb's sooner or later is the water ingress issue it will cost you dearly to pay to be repaired but is a simple(ish) job to DIY BEFORE the car has leaked.

Steer well clear of the 2.0 140 as it's a dog of an engine that will cost thousands WHEN the oil pump fails.

Thanks for the reply, rang about the car and a polish guy answered the phone,i asked about the timing belt which he said was done in a dismisive tone. Think i'll pass on this one. What is the chances of picking up a nice clean low milage example in the UK. Preferably a good spec with reasonable milage. Year wouldnt be to important (04 - 08) as long as the price is right.

They are out there, it took me a couple of months to sell mine (I didn't push it too hard as my new car was still a couple of months off being built).

The MKI Superb never really sold very well, not sure why as it's a much better car than the Passat that it is based upon, one thing I would say is don't pay silly dealer prices for one, you can pick up a 2004 onwards car for around £4k I have seen dealers trying to shift 2007 carsfor just shy of £10k - they will be on the forecourt a very long time at that price!!

Providing you don't need an auto then the manual box is the best option coupled up to the 1.9 TDi PD130, this was dropped in favour of the 2.0 TDi 140 when the car was face-lifted (around 2007 IIRC) and should be avoided at all costs.

My 2004 PD130 Comfort never let me down in the 3 1/2 years I ownded it and also never actually needed anything other than routine servicing (not quite true as the coolant temperature sensor failed, but they are a very common failure across the whole of the VAG ranges).

Take your time when you look for one, check the carpets are bone dry (especially the passenger side rear footwell) and ALL of the electrics work as they should, remove the plenum chamber grommets and you will have a car that should go on for a very long time.

Agreed - only VAG could make the thing worse with a later engine.

rotodiesel.

DiscoDave, are you still looking to buy? What price range are you looking at? Its ironic as im thinking of selling my Edition 100......

i agree that vag had some issues with certain components with the 140 tdi engine....but how comes some cars with the same engine do high mileage and some dont? On both older and facelift versions the problems are still shared. what with water ingress and suspension problems, but at the end of the day, its still a nice car to drive, wether its a v6 diesel or a 130 awx engine or a 140 bss engine or even petrol versions.

After all itsall very easy to critisise the tdi 140 facelift, but we have to remember that quite a few people bought the cars with that engine not knowing what was going to happen....the same could be said about water ingress in the older versions and still we hear of owners and dodgy electrics in their cars...all cars have faults.....their even recalling rolls royces because of issues...i dont think any car is exempt from faults....take alfa romeo....those earlier models would rust away in front of you and no amount of k rust would have prevented that !

I can sympathise with owners who bought the older superb new only to find out later that the model was upgraded and enhanced, but one simply didnt know about the issues.....even those who bought the older superbs not knowing it was going to let in water and ruin the electrics and drown the servo.

We dont even know if there will be issues with the new superb yet.....give it a few more years and it might be a different senario.

Im not criticising anyone for buying a 140 before the oil pump issues became apparent that was just bad luck on their part, but why on earth would ANYONE choose one when they know about the issues? that would be madness!

I agree that all cars will have their issues, but when they are simple things to rectify it wouldn't put me off from the car.

I seem to recall a couple of instances already where a couple of cars are suffering from water ingress already! this to be expected really as most if not all VAG cars seem to leak at some stage!! :wall:

Surely VAG/Skoda will have engineered out the known issues from the old Superb though?

Personally i think it's easier for the designer whether it be from vw or skoda or any other manufacturer to design a car that looks good to the eye. He/she has a computer and they can design stunning looking vehicles that eventually make the production plant, but i do feel they should also look into the not so glamourous side of the bit and pieces like water ingress and mechanical issues, and like fred bloggs said all the evidence is there to sieze the opportunity and eliminate the continuous problems people like us report on here with our vehicles from the past or even to the present day.

Then they can be confident in offering a car that not only looks good, but with good reliability and ecconomy and of course resale values. But having said that, i sometimes feel that the manufacturers actually design a car with these faults, then that way they know eventually that particular car will be either sold on or shopped in for another new vehicle! After all that is how they make their money....from selling new cars, and for them to have a car that is bullet proof and water tight isnt exactly a good sales pitch when they eventually see their profits take a dip when owners are keeping their car's for longer. Maybe thats why skoda is selling better than vw.

Now that we see some manufacturers offering 5year warranties with their vehicles, makes me wonder how soon it will be before the likes of volkswagen do the same? probably another 5yrs knowing our luck !! But hey, we can all live and dream and hope that one day it will be the norm and not having to pay around another £1500 for a 2 year warranty that will make up the 5 years when the standard 3yr warranty expires.
