Insuring a 2nd car...

Featured Replies

Righty-Ho.

In 3 to 4 months time, my current 120 miles per week to / from work will become 4-500, as it's almost certain i'll be working at Catterick Garrison.

There's no way i'm putting that sort of mileage on the Octy, and no way i'm selling it either....hence i'll be buying a cheap diesel nail for work. Escort TDi estate, Pug 306 TDi that sort of thing....An Escort type van could be a possibiltiy too.

Does anyone know what the procedure is for insuring a second car, where i will be the sole driver of both vehicles, hence one will be at home when the other is in use. I've never insured 2 cars so i have no idea what the plan is...

As i'm with LV, any advice re them would be useful, but general advice will be helpful too.

Cheers peeps :)

D'oh: I thought from the title that you were buying a classic car, or track day weapon. :(

Anyway, despite the sheer common sense of it (you'll only be driving one at once) I think you'll find that most insurers will charge you completely seperately for the two vehicles. Ask LV for a quote first, as they might give you some "free" no-claims bonus to start you off on the second car but after that you're on your own, clocking up NCB on two different cars.

They may make a slight allowance when you tick the "I drive other cars" box, come renwal time though. Fingers crossed.

I did this when looking to run the octavia TDI I bought & sold recently. Thought I might as well lay the Fabia up for a little while, and put a few miles on the octavia, which wouldn't have mattered so much... LV said I could not add a car to the existing policy and would have to start a fresh policy with them... The quote was just stoopid money, and the hassle of uninsuring the Fabia, then insuring & uninsuring the octy, and re-insuring the fabia ---- it just wasn't worth it, so the octy was SORN'd once the tax expired, and it remained uninsured. :(

My mate just sold a 1.8 TD Mondeo on an S plate for

i've got 3 cars and they are all on seperate policies. I dont think any insurer will allow you to have >1 car on a single policy so you will need to take out a new policy - for which you will have NO no-claims!

A lot of insurers are understanding (beleive it or not) and will give you an introductory no claims (sometimes 70%!). Don't think that you HAVE to stay with LV - shop around like you would if you were insuring the Octy and dont forget to explain you have xx years on your other car...

Yep, I already run 2 cars. The octy and the mondeo, you will need to take out a second policy which will start with zero no claims discount because you can only use your current ncd on one policy. Your best hope is what happened to me at the time, your current insurer gives you an introductory discount on the 2nd policy. I got 4 years as an icd, and when renewal came up it was shown on the policy that I had 5 years ncd.

Yeah they scr*w you big style. No NCD on the 2nd car, and you don't appear to be building it up either :(
