Compression test results - What now?

Featured Replies

So, Regal had my car for 2 days in order to get it checked for the oil usage.

They stripped down the turbo intake and exhaust sides of the turbo to find no signs of oil loss of contamination!

The compression test then returned the results of 300 300 300 300.

So... 300 across all pistons.

Whilst there the matey admitted he didnt know exactly what the values on PD engines should be and VW had not got back to him.

He said ( and i know ) that N.A petrols normally have about 200... not sure what its measured in :giggle:

He thought that 300 was half of what should be but after doing some calculation... i think it was 23 psi x 14.75? it came out at 295.

So...

Does anyone know what the compression values should be?

Thanks.

Throw these figures at Skoda see what they say.

Ive been thinking today and your car will have good compression as its the oil rings that you seemed to think had failed

Are you sure all of your breather pipes are clear?

According to the Haynes manual the minimum compression pressure is 19.5 bar.

Which works out at 287 psi......so you should be OK at 300 psi

They did a leak down and couldnt find anything niether.

I guess its just one of those diesels that uses alot of oil.

I did do the pikey CCV mod for a short while, but used washingmachine waste pipe so the oil stayed in the coils and didnt go into the 'catch tank'

After a day or 2 there was maybe half a teaspoon in the pipe at most.

Any other breather pipes?

Its not going to be acceptable from the ammount you made out in the other thread, practically a two stroke.

Be interesting to see what they find.

What who find?

All the searching and tests have been done... Pretty much inconclusive,

Its obviously got a serious issue somewhere

Its go to be going somewhere.

What is the actual oil consumption per mile?

  • Author

No idea how to work this out correctly.

How much does the dipstick show from the top of the checkered mark to showing nothing on it?

1 litre from min to max

  • Author

So 1l is from the top of the hatching to bottom of hatching?

When is best time to take a measurement?

Yes min to max across the hatching

Time, err morning I guess. Top it up to max, note mileage, how long until it gets to the min,

Okay. Will top it up before i go tomoz.

Then will check every few miles when i get home.

Will feed back my findings :)

Could oil cooler be leaking?

Oil consumption depends primarily on two things: the valve guides and piston rings. If the valve guides are worn, or if there's too much clearance between the valve stems and guides, or if the valve guide seals are worn, cracked, missing, broken or improperly installed, the engine will suck oil down the guides and into the cylinders. The engine may still have good compression, but will use a lot of oil.

It could also be the oil control rings....

I thought the compression test would find the awnser to it being the oil control rings etc!

Am i expected to have it taken apart?

And where is the oil coolor to check?

Im buying some oil after college and going to see how long it takes from max to min.

If the oil cooler was leaking it would be filling the cooling system up with oil

The oil control rings (Scraper ring) just scrapes oil from the bore so you will be seeing good compression

Does your car smoke heavily?

And a turbo if fitted.

Car hardly smokes at all.

When booting i see some but not any different from any other diesel.

When in neutral and revving to 3.5k ive seen a ball of smoke come out. But again. Nothing major.

Passed the MOT smoke test fine aswell with no comments...

What oil is it you are using and how many miles has the car done?

My VW T5 1.9TDI 104 on a 54 reg used oil for about 20-25,000miles then stopped but it wasnt as major as yours probably a litre a month but VW said this is acceptable

I have been using Castrol Edge TDI 5w 40.

Im going to go VW tomorrow and get some of their specific oil (labelled in the 'Which oil' thread)

And then try and work out how exactly how much it is using.

And its on 77k.

Thought it might have been clocked but checked on vagcom and its fine.

Just went to VW and bought 5l of their oil for £26!

Good stuff. Is the stuff recommended as the VW oil off the what oil to use thread. Went there armed with the part number, to find out its like 5 years old!

Nether-the-less, got the correct one now :D

Just filled it up to just above the hatched marking (oops!)

And reset the miles calc thing.

Will check it every 20 miles or so.
