Dash lights flickering

Featured Replies

Well thats the best way to describe it really.

I noticed it doing it recently, but I've only seen it out the corner of my eye so I though I was imagining it.

However on my way into work this morning it did it a few times, the headlights don't flicker at all.

Any ideas?

I have this too - it affects all the lights connected to the instrument dimmer - i.e. the instruments, the hazard warning switch and the heater controls. Hence that rules out any problem with the instrument lights themselves.

I suspect many people will say it's the battery which is why I've been trying to find out what the battery is on a late vRS (which no one on this forum can answer!) - however the steering's absolutely fine on my car being fully assisted as soon as the engine starts - which it does quickly each time - so I'm inclined to think it's something else that's causing it.

I did run the instrument dimmer through its entire travel 20-30 times yesterday evening to see if it was a dirty rheostat - but it didn't seem to affect the flickering - which occurs randomly irrespective of what speed the engine's doing at the time or whether braking or accelerating. Might be a dodgy electrical connection somewhere in the switch vicinity.

Do you have the later smaller capacity battery like me?

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Yes it's got the battery without a cover.

I tried to make it replicate the fault but its exactly the same as yours, completely random.

The battery is fine as far as I know, yet to test it with a multimeter but it starts perfectly from cold etc

notice it does it when you flick your window switches up when the windows are up full, just keep clicking up and watch your dash flicker dark and light.

My wifes 06 vRS dash lights flicker sometimes.

It's also been back to the dealers 3 times for a power steering fault which the ECU logs as low battery voltage.

However, the dealers have checked the alternator and battery output, wiring etc and all is OK, and to be fair it always starts easily first time even when the outside temps dropped to -14 a couple of weeks ago.

Yes thats normal on most cars, the headlights dim ever so slightly too, or at low speeds when the power steering pump is working harder.
