03 vRS with 76k....?

I was looking for a lower mileage car, but an 03 vRS, silver, one owner, has cropped up very local to me with 76k on the clock. I've read the very useful 'buying guide' and will ask the seller all the appropriate questions (inc timing belt/water pump).

Would a car with this mileage on cause any concern, or have any likely impending major work/replacement bits and bobs?

I am guilty of getting hung-up on mileage and have rarely taken a car past 100k. I know modern cars are supposedly much better at handling higher mileages than they used to be, and I know this one is not very high at all, but thought I'd ask for opinions.

Mine has done 113K, 63K of which has been running over 300 bhp (no internal mods) and it hasn't missed a beat.......touch wood ;)

Its more about the receipts than miles, if it hasnt had much work done then the chances are, a lot of it will land on you over the next 20K miles. For example the suspension is normally only good for around 80K and the lambda sensors start to play up at 90-100K

Bushes will likely need doing in the next 20K too, if they haven't been done already. Drivers seat base is another one that comes up at about 90K-100K

not even run in yet. I've seent hem still going strong at 177k. Mine has 92k and runs sweet as.

sold mine at 140K and it had never missed a beat in the 30K i'd done

My 52 plate is nearing 124k, 30k of which I've done and its never missed a beat :thumbup:

Mileage is no big deal on these cars. Service history is though. Do a thorough check of suspension, brakes, etc, & make sure everything electrical works properly, doors, windows, A/C etc.

My 03 is on 76k, no real probs :thumbup:

My 55 is on 73k and never missed a beat been the best car i've had performance vs costs vs reliablity and thats why I ordered a Mk2 CR Vrs

Just check service history and ring around garages where works been done to check it out (important with cambelt).

If its only had one owner it must be a good one or they'd have sold it on :)

As said, history matters more than the number. Check up on that and maybe have some cash set aside for unforseen issues (like with any car) but if it's been cared for and maintained that sort of mileage isn't an issue.

That Octy should still be nice and tight and in the process of just loosing up! My 2002 52 Octavia vRS WRC has only got 58k on the clock and it feels boxfresh! :)

mines an 03 on 76k running great,a local vw garage has had one in with 230k and still running well.

Just been to look at this one. A nice clean, straight looking car and it drove very nicely, with not knocks from the suspension. turns out the one owner was the police and it was an un-marked traffic car. I guess this being the case it will have been correctly maintained, but there is no service history (stamped book, invoices, etc) with the car. The dealer suggested a report would be available from the police workshop which maintained it.

Although I'm sure it would be a good car, I'm not sure I could buy without knowing what had been done and when regarding service and maintenance.

It is the first one I have looked at (and driven), so my search will continue.

Do they all have heavy clutches? Nearly pushed my foot through the floor when I got back in my BM!

I'd politely suggest to the dealer you would like THEM to source the cars history if they are serious about selling it!

Id say a good indication on any car has been looked after is the tyres. If theyre a poor make, chances are its been scrimped on in other ways too. If you have 4 matching, good branded tyres all round you should be onto a good car.

MIne has quite a heavy clutch compared to brand new hire cars Ive had. I feel its a lot more positive though than a light as a feather one.

except mines on 74k still feels like new.

all depends on how its driven ( city , motorway etc ) and if its looked after ... mines done 117,000 and still not missed a beat .. still on original clutch and suspension which are all ok ( as get checked regular when its serviced ... and the only time its failed an mot was the first one ( dodgy skoda garage tried to mug me over ) ... took to another dealer cos i didnt agree ( i trained as a mechanic when i was younger before changing career ) - 2003 vrs estate 117,000 and still going

remember if someone says ' parts will go at xxxx miles ' its only a guess and dont mean every car will ... look after it ( service reg / cam belt at right intervls etc ) and u shouldnt have a prob ( unless its a dog )

I'd be a bit wary of buying an ex Police one, from an insiders viewpoint I can tell you that they get driven very hard and will not always get chance to be driven gently at the end of a run and cool down properly.

However if it is cheap and you can get hold of invoices or reports to show what has been done, it's worth a go.

My 2004 one is passing 67k now, at about 50k miles the engine really seemed to start loosening up it seems to go like the clappers compared to when I got it :yes:

yeah would have to agree !!! .. mine seems much better with the extra miles on it compared to when i bought it ... would have to say though .. yes the police do drive them hard but they do service them regular and properly

Hi there mine is a 03 vrs with 106000 I have had car for 6 months and put 6 k on it now have had no probs at all ,it is mapped at 265 and I still get 44mph on motorway!! I love the car and is a pleasure to drive...I will be doing all new suspension shortly have had 6 pot calipers on front.I will keep mine and run it into the ground as it is the best car I have had in years...I also have a 2010 S4 and still love driving the vrs....
