Not a good day...

Not going to be a particularly small bill Rob, but less than if engine work was needed I suppose!

As ever it's the labour that makes the number, as it'll be at 10hr+ I'm guessing. I also wasn't imagining the required exhaust work, but I suppose it depends on *how* it lets go... :dull:

Cheers,

Steve

Steve,

as I said earlier SWMBO's 2.0 PD Leon let go in exactly the same way about 2 days prior to yours, I thankfully had the spare turbo, but my local Indy got it sorted in 2 days(same work required as yours, oil in pipes, intercoooler, exhaust) with us also getting a major servce (timing belt, water pump, oil and filters) all changed at the same time, the bill came in at below £450 just to give you an idea what you should be paying, IIRC my last major service cost me £350 from Skoda Dealer.

You got everything sorted, including the major service done in two days? Impressive! How many techs work at the place?

And that was £450 INCLUDING the service??

Yep! they are a really good garage, they do have about 5-6 techs, and I did have the spare turbo sitting ready to fit, but yep I was happy with the result, I saved on Labour for the Turbo work as they had the timing belt off anyway. hats off to JW Service Centre!

That's crazy - £450 would usually be a fairly decent price for cambelt and std service, never mind a major service plus turbo swap! Over this side of the water anyway... Your labour rates must be super low over there. Either that or they're not making any money :o

Plus there's usually just short of £100 in associated parts when swapping the turbo - gaskets, oil feed pipes, bolts etc. I know that from experience when the hybrid went on the Fabia, as I priced it all up myself.

Cheers,

Steve

in fairness I have recently sent quite a lot of work their way, they have performed most of the mods on my Octy as well as the Leon also. I guess they wanted to look after me, lol the labour rates are about £50 an hour at my local Independant, In other news Ive been tempted to my local dealer to look at a FL VRS TSI tomorrow, what ya think Wardy?

  • Author

Ah, that makes a bit more sense then :)

£50/hr is about the norm here for a decent trusted indy.

Don't think I could be tempted into a TSI these days, not with fuel prices as they are. It's a great engine and economical for what it offers though. Have fun

Bugger. Damaged cars are never good news. Especially after christmas. :(

What was causing it not to turn over? Mine wouldn't either when the turbo expired.

  • Author

Hey John. Still in the shop as the turbo has expired in a fairly flamboyant way!

So of course there's the usual precautions to undertake re tiny particles being left behind. Presumed it was *just* the seals that had gone, with the amount of smoke and the fact there were no obvious signs of imminent failure, right upto the loss of power. So it might need a new 'cooler in amongst it all, plus all the pipework being dunked/degreased etc etc. Plus the exhaust system is full of oil - and so it goes on....

Never a good time indeed, but could do without it in January :swear:

No turn over - excess oil in the pistons seems most likely. He had it started up fairly soon after it went in last week. And needed to check engine condition over as well - but all seems well in that department.

You at Stretton on Sun? Might pop over but not sure I'll have it back by then.

Cheers,

Steve

Yeah going to try and pop over now the pups getting older.

Bring them with you

Right - nearing the end. But I'm going to need a new exhaust. The excess oil has ruined the cat and silencer baffles. And despite leaving it to drain, it's not going to work. Will be smoking like James Bond. By the look of the sump level, it's let go of about 3L! :wonder:

So, going to get a system sorted, and a de-cat pipe. Ergo, best place for the de-cat please, and quickly - as I need this straight away. The system isn't quite so immediate, as I can get the de-cat on with the existing system, and hobble over to the exhaust place I know; hopefully early doors so I don't smoke half of South Manchester in the process :|

Cheers,

Steve

P.S. Anyone know if the 2.0T Milltek system will be compatible with the PD140? Anyone tried one? Just looking at an off-the-shelf option too, to save having to get the car to the exhaust fabricators.

Wardy, my bro has an Octy with the same engine as yours & the turbo on it let go in a very similar way. The garage flushed the whole exhaust out with petrol! It still smoked for a couple of hundred miles, but it was fine ever since-a bit of spirited driving seemed to sort it! (Good old 'Italian tune-up :giggle: )

HTH-otherwise, if you are going the whole hog with it, make sure you get a nice twin exit system like Harry's: :mmm:

Pm'd you back Wardy Re: Decat pipe etc!

Wardy!

Awesome for the Exhaust and Pipeworx for the decat

Awesome for the Exhaust and Pipeworx for the decat

Aren't Awesome selling the pipewerx decats themselves now? (runs off to check Awesome Jan newsletter - maybe, maybe not)

Edited by 'daiking'

They are i think but only for the normal 1.8t and 2.0tfsi etc

Yep, can't get any committed answer from Awesome about linking up the TDI decat to the Milltek TFSI system on the PD140. Don't really want to be the guinea pig on this, with the car in it's current state! Wouldn't mind ordinarily, if I had a working and operational std system to fall back on!

Looking at taking daz_pd's decat off him, seeing as he'll be going to petrol in March! But need to sort out shipping it today...

Contacted Milltek directly, but didn't get anything definitive there either. Basically that they've never tried the TFSI system on a TDI Octy. Guinea pig status again really :)

I have personal recommendation for JP Exhausts in Macc, but they can't make me a decat without seeing the car, as they've not got designs for one. So could go for Daz's decat there, and get them to marry up a system to that. But again, would need that decat pipe here, in order to link it upto the existing system and hobble the 15 miles or so across, with smoke billowing :D

Last option I can see - I've contacted Pipewerx up near Wigan, which is about 30 miles of motorway! Hmmm. Their rep and quality of work is good, but they have each car in for system work, to make sure all is well (which I like). So again, I've asked about a middle option of them sending me a decat pipe down (hopefully they have designs on one) and then get the car upto them for the rest of the system.

Deary me; why is nothing ever straightforward?!

Thanks for listening! ;)

Cheers,

Steve

Steve, there is a company in Stockport that does custom performance exhausts who from what I have heard have a very good rep as well I think that it's Topgear performance, they have some sort of tie in with Longlife exhausts http://www.longlife.co.uk

They are only based in Bredbury, with a bit of armbending I bet they would do a pick up

PS: pipeworx are good but they are a bit further up than Wigan, a fair old trek, near Burscough, just got back from there today!!

Yep - TopGear at Bredbury are LongLife agents. Next to the petrol station just off the roundabout as you come off of the M60.

I used them to do a full system on my 3.2 V6 4x4 after the original blew a massive hole in the middle box. It was cheaper to get a handmade stainless cat back system than replace with OEM Isuzu parts - there were no aftermarket alternatives. I originally had it done at LongLife Plymouth but the system they did was awful and get blowing from the Y-piece so in the end LongLife agreed for Stockport to do it again from scratch. They took half the time and the system was spot on.

The guys name was Andy and the email address might have been [email protected]

Thanks guys. Might give them a shout. JP Exhausts in Macc are booked up, Pipewerx are too far to struggle along to really, so this might be a decent option

Can you not try flushing it out with petrol as has been suggested or try caustic soda, we used to use it in the 70's for degunking exhaust systems on 2 strokes, another trick was an oxy acetaline torch with a big flat flame & burn the worst out.

At least that gets the car driveable & if it dosent work perfectly gives you time to decide what you want & you can drive the car to your chosen supplier.

If you use caustic simply bung up one end & leave it stood on end & full for a few hours, preferably over whatever you intend to drain it into, its actually quite a good drain cleaner. make it very strong BUT WEAR GOGGLES & GLOVES

To add a potato makes a great bung for the zorst

Edited by Stuart_J

Steve, you could half fill it with petrol and lob a match down one end........with the potato fitted it would make a great mortar!! :giggle:

  • Author

LOL, thanks for the mortar tips guys!

Will make the suggestion about petrol flushing. Will this apply to the cat as well do you think, or do I just move ahead with the decat plan?

If the cat is oil soaked it will be very difficult to clean. They have a huge internal surface area. DPF 'decat' is probably the best option.
