Strange problem

Featured Replies

Well my vrs has developed a strange problem. It's a kind of whistling noise when accelerating.

The usual TDI whistle and whoosh is there but when the car is warmed up and turned off for 30mins or so, when i turn it back on there is a whistle, that is louder than usual when the turbo kicks in. After a while of running the loud whistle just goes back to the normal whistle.

What could this be?

Most likely a slight boost leak, probable at the top connection to the inter-cooler.

Hopefully not your turbo.

Unfortunately mine went a few months ago, and it made a similar noise on boost.

Ali from Unit 18 and Paul from RS Tuning both said it sounded like it was over-boosting, and sure enough when the car was at Shark Performance getting repaired Ben found a boost pipe with a considerable split. If only I'd had it checked out, hindsight eh?

I'd have your car checked for boost leaks, as they might be causing it to over-boost, which may be the noise you're hearing. With the benefit of hindsight, that is what I should have done.

Also, if it develops a police siren type noise, certainly get it looked at as that more than likely will be a turbo problem.

From my experience, it'd be worth having someone who knows their stuff having a good look at it; as a few quid spent on that is way more desirable than dreaded turbo issues.

As I said, hopefully it isn't your turbo and might be something trivial, no doubt someone will post some probable causes soon. Whatever it is, I hope you get it sorted quickly and cheaply.

Did you notice any loss in performance, or black smoke??

you sure? Would that no be accompanied by smoke and a loss in power, cos i have neither of those

Not always, I have a boost leak but doesn't smoke any less than usual and power still feels strong.

No smoke or loss of performance at the time. If I were you I'd drive it steady, off boost, and try and have it looked at as soon as you can.

Sorry I can't help any more, better safe than sorry though I'd say.
