Range Function on Trip Computer

Featured Replies

Just wondering how accurate the range function is on the trip computer. I put £40 in the car last week and my fuel light has just come on. When i filled her last week i checked the range function and it said i would get 285 miles untill i run out so i thought i would reset the trip on the mileometer thingy to see how many miles i actualy get so i was quite surprised when it was reading 150miles.

Now i know the range function probally works better on long journeys but i have hardly done any town driving this week just short journeys really out of the centre of town. So just want to know how acuarte they are and what figures use get.

mine is the same mate one day it says 270 miles then it will say 160 and i have only done 10 miles lol

The range function seems to be based of the fuel consumption over recent journeys. After a short journey in town with a cold engine, the predicted range will fall. Then take it on a constant speed 60mph A road journey for an hour and the predicted miles will rise substantially. I guess it is doing its best but cannot predict what kind of driving style you will use in future, so uses recent history.

pikpilot is correct; the "available range" function is based on your recent driving pattern. I've come off commuting onto a long steady speed drive (actually at higher speed than I normally commute at, but my commute can be start-stop), and had a longer available range prediction after 30 miles of the long drive than I had at the beginning!

If danp is basing his report on 10 miles in Bristol traffic...
