PD Clutch update....

Featured Replies

I have just recieved and email back from AmD ref the Sachs clutch kits for the Fabia vRS. Prices are as follows..

Sinterized material disc ---- part # 881864 999969.....

Is it an engine out job to replace the clutch Ross?

No, but its deffo a gearbox out ;)

Thats not so bad then :)

The best thing about early front wheel drive Vauxhall/Opel cars was that the clutch could be changed just by removing the little cover off the clutch housing.

Sounds hell of a lot more fun than changing the clutch on a Land Rover then.

Doesn't compare too much more expensive compared to the standard one either does it?

Do you know what the tourque ratings are for the standard parts?

Less than 300lbft i'd say by the way some are slipping. Which being as a standard car puts out approx 240 lbft its not really suprising.

Could be interested in this. :)

Would the gearbox be able to take over 370 lbsft?

Do you think it would it also help the vibrating dual mass flywheel problem as this is the problem I have rather than clutch slip.

Hmm, so a group buy would mean about

organic has been made without the use of genetically modified parts? :D

Other than the sinterized plate handles more torque no, Paulo might be the best one to ask I think on this, he owes me a favour maybe i'll consult him.

I'd be interesting in a GB for this too.

as would I, I dont get much slip but I'm guessing it's only a matter of time till I do. But I do get some juddering

Right ive had an update on what the clutch would feel like etc from Sachs via AmD, many thanks to Paul for sorting this...

"The first upgrade of a Performance clutch is the Pressure Plate, this gives

approx 25% increase from standard in transferable torque through the clutch,

this will give a slightly heavier clutch pedal. Second the Organic face

clutch plate give a 10% to 15% increase in transferable torque and the

driver should notice no difference from a normal clutch plate. These parts

are straight replacement parts and normally do not require any modifications

to the flywheel. The sintered clutch plate although giving more

transferable torque gives a very much more aggressive clutch bite point, and

is not really recommended for daily "around town" type driving, it is

normally for racing type purposes. It also will tend to wear quicker than

the organic disc and can cause damage to the pressure plate and flywheel

operating surfaces so causing either replacement or machining to reclaim the

surface."

So it looks like we would have to go with the slightly lesser organic centre plate so as not to make the clutch too harsh and as not to destroy the flywheel.

The down side to this is the organic plate is

Ross,

Do you know whether they do a solid flywheel for the fabia? I know there is one for the golf, TT etc from the USA which is either solid steel or a lightweight one made out of aluminium.

The reason I ask is that every PD clutch that I have come accross, when it slips and over heats knackers the dual mass flywheel. VW say its common - due to the heat created by the slipping clutch changing the compressive properties of the springs within the dual mass flywheel. At

I know someone with a solid flywheel on a PD and the vibrations that come through it are something awfull.

Helix us a solid flywheel and the kit with a billet cover plate and sintered plates only rated at 320 ft-lb

So am I correct in saying that I could specify just the Organic face clutch plate and get another 10-15% more torque transferrable, the only reason I ask is that my clutch atm doesnt seem to bad, and if I could just change this and nothing else, I wouldn't notice any difference in clutch feel and yet I could get another 10-15% - around the 300lb/ft mark which is what i'm at now.

You could, but its no 5 minute job to take the gearbox out of a Fabia vRS, so I would change the cover plate while im there, makes sense.

Looks like an ideal job for a 'how to' if you get bored Ross, it' definately an ongoing subject.
