RH - LH drive observations.......

Featured Replies

I have just spent a couple of days in Surrey and Hampshire to attend a funeral, and drove a rented Octavia for the two days. Granted, it was not a Yeti, but I think the observations are relevant anyway.

The wipers are dir´fferent from the LH drive Yeti I drive here at home. The passenger side wiper comes much further into the driver's side swipe area than it did on my Octy and as it does on the Yeti. It seems that the relative location of the pivot pionts is different on the RH drive version for reasons unknown. I did not experiences any water-on-the- driver's window problems, but the swept area of the sindshield was diffeent form the LH drive versions.

The gears shift problems with mistaking first and reverse became quite clear. I do not have any problems with the LH gear pattern, where the 1st/reverse are closest to the driver, but the selection of 1st and reverse was clearly more klutzy in the RH Octy. Granted, I do not drive RH cars too often, and some could be contributed to switching from using the right hand at home and the left hand in the UK. However, I did live in the UK for a number of years, so the switch was not something new, and the 1st/reverse imprecision was the same after driveíng the car for two days as it was when I first started. I t seemed that the 1st/reverse was mus´ch further away from you in the RH car than the 5th/6th is in the LH version.

I also better understand the aversion to xenon lights. I was amazed at how many cars drove with poorly adjusted and blinding headlights, which were very disturbing on the small curvy roads in the rain. The Octy did not have xenons, and I sorely missed the extra light they provide.

No big revelations, but a little confirmation of previous discussions on these subjects.

Oh, It was nice to experience 12°C weather for a change, Marmite on toast and the full English breakfast. If you let the authorities build any more roundabouts, cars should be set-up for circle track performance, as straight line driving will be completely irrelevant.

Returning to DK with 4 inches of wet sloppy snow and the trusted Shehvide with both xenons, winter tyres and 4WD for the 60 miles home at midnight was just the ticket.

Very peculiar that the wiper arm positions might be different. One would have though that with computer aided design these days the wipers would just have been electronically "mirrored".

I agree, Johann, but there may be something in the way under the bonnet - maybe the wiper motor is located in the same place and the geometry of the connecting rods to the wiper shafts don't quite work out.
