Engine won't turn off

Featured Replies

I've got a 1.9 PD Octy that today started to behave in a very strange way. I was driving along when pretty much all the warning lights on the dashboard came on except the glo-plug one. There was no change to the way the car drove, brakes, throttle response etc. all felt fine even though the handbrake on light was flashing, the ASR had turned off and the ABS light was on, as well as the power steering and airbag lights. The car remained driving as normal, brakes, throttle response and engine idle all exactly the same (For the bit it was driven for).

I parked the car and turned the key to the off position and removed it and a couple of the warning lights turned off, but the engine stayed running and handbrake light stayed flashing. I had to stall the car to stop the engine. The warning lights remained on with the handbrake light flashing even after I locked the car. When I put the key back in and tried to start the engine again, the starter motor didn't even kick. After disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it the car started as normal but the warning lights popped up again and the engine wouldn't turn off.

The only possible clue I have at the moment is that earlier today I had cleaned the nozzle for the back window wiper assuming it had got clogged again as the washer wasn't working. With the nozzle cleared, there is still no fluid getting to it, but I could hear the pump working. My guess my testing the washer sprayed washer fluid onto something important in the ECU/ABS, but I don't know enough about the layout of the car's electrics to know where to start looking - the usual spot this pipe leaks at in the boot seems to be fine, carpets and wheel well are dry in the car, so I'm guessing it's in the engine bay somewhere.

If anyone has seen this before or has suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Started the car up today and pretty much all the warning lights turned on once the battery was connected and the key turned to the on position (Glowplugs, check engine, brake warning, battery, airbag, power steering etc.) were on. Took logs thanks to a friend of mine with VAGcom, logs are below. Faults seem to be a list of intermittent issues, but the engine runs perfectly but does not switch off when the key is removed and a few warning lights - power steering, brake fault and airbag stay on even after the key is removed.

Looks like the kind of thing water in the electrics might cause given it's a pile of intermittent/spurious voltage faults. But I have no idea where to go looking to sort it out.

Here's the log taken after reconnecting the battery but not restarting the engine:

End ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Loads of faults, the only ones that have nothing to do with the current problem are the aircon low pressure warning (It has a leak) and the reverse parking sensors, which only work when the weather's hot and dry.

The next log is from after resetting the fault codes and restarting the engine:

I've left the car parked on level ground for the last couple of days, so if the problem is fluid collecting in the engine bay somewhere it'll hopefully have drained (It was reversed uphill when I was at the rear washer). Before I start blindly poking around in the engine, what route does the rear washer pipe follow from the bottle behind the front light to the rear of the car? I'm guessing wherever this crosses the electrical system is where I need to look.

Have you cleared the faults and tried to get them again?

TBH lots of those look at flat battery, but I doubt that would stop the car from stopping. Have you checked your oil level as a derv will happily keep running off leaking oil until the butterfly valve cuts off the air.

If the oil is low, top it up urgently and go to a garage as it could be leaking turbo seals or many other things, which if left could lead to the engine running on oil until total engine destruction occurs.

...did wonder about oil from faulty turbo seals being inducted and burned...

All the faults were cleared and the second log included above lists the faults that popped back up again.

The battery was replaced with a brand new one in early December once the cold made the old battery start to struggle with turning the engine over, so I don't think the battery can be blamed.

the car was serviced the week before christmas, so the oil level should be spot on, but I'll check this. If the engine was running off leaked oil then presumably it wouldn't be running as well as usual. At the moment the car drives perfectly and the only indication anything is wrong is that the engine doesn't turn off with the key and warning lights stay on.

Is there a possibility this fault could be caused by a faulty ignition relay? I was googling earlier and found this mentioned as a possibility for when the engine won't shut off with the key. The ignition isn't staying on when I turn the key off - the radio turns off and the back lighting on the dash goes off. When the key is turned to on the fuel pump can be heard priming as per usual but there's nothing at all the be heard from the starter motor when I turn the key to start. If the battery is disconnected and reconnected it'll start perfectly but not shut off.

Once it's up and running, a derv will run off engine oil and derv just as happily as it will run of derv (well close enough that I doubt you'd notice). Once the fuel has stopped however after you've turned it off, then you'd still be running on oil.

Since there are no longer mechanical fuel pumps and the electronics are unlikely to inject fuel once you have turned the engine to the off position (electrically), then I find it very hard to accept that the fuel is still running if the ECU etc is working.

IMHO, check the oil, step one is get a good auto electrician to check over everything to make sure the car isn't ignoring the ignition off somewhere, then look at the possibility of leaking oil.

You should check your oil after every journey IMHO as this will soon let you know if the car is burning it.

A runaway will usually cause the engine to consume itself in a hurry and it will affect the running of the engine regardless. While I was scanning this car, I ran the engine to replicate the behaviour. After switching off the key and removing it, there was no change in the operation of the engine at all. If this was a runaway situation, I'd expect a change due to the reduction in fuelling (removing the diesel supply and letting it run on oil alone). Most leaks are not going to allow a consistent enough oil flow to maintain consistent rpm, which this car was doing. I shut it off by actuating the ASV from VCDS.

This aside, runaway cannot explain the other problems this car is experiencing. These are all symptomatic of an electrical fault - my own best guess on this is that water has gotten into the main electrical harness terminal in the driver's footwell. I'm going to have a poke through ELSA tonight and see what we can find. I'm guessing there's some point where the washer hose crosses the electrical system.

Cant explain the running while ignition is off, but have you checked the earth? i had similar on a petrol vectra a few years back (without the running on problem) and it was a loose earth connection... just a thought as not sure if the management system would pick that up??

How would I go about checking the earth connections? Is a continuity test from say the ground on the various fuse boxes to the battery (-) terminal likely to show this up or is there a specific connection that I should look for? I'll be at the car tonight anyway. Short list of things to do:

Check oil level - though I'm pretty sure the engine isn't burning oil.

Check the electrical box in the driver's footwell for dampness.

Check the electrical box beside the battery for dampness.

Have a look under the car to see if anything has dripped out (Hopefully the driveway is dry enough to show this up).

Checked ELSA last night and I can't find any details on where the rear washer pipe is routed. There isn't even mention of the well known issue with the tube connection in the boot as far as I can see. The annoying thing is that the first step in the instructions for getting at the washer bottle is 'remove front bumper', so it'll be a long job :(...

Back at the car this evening:

There was a noticeable smell of washer fluid in the car when I opened the door. The oil level is spot on thankfully. All the carpets are bone dry and there's no sign of liquid in the fuse box inside the door and the box beside the battery (They were checked more because they were easy to get at though, too high up to have washer fluid leaking into them). Driveway was too damp to make anything leaking from the car noticeable - it's parked on a dry spot now though. Couldn't find the electrical panel in the footwell - if trim panels have to come off it's not obvious which ones.

The engine started easily and ran fine once I reconnected the battery. Only lights on are the (!) brake warning light flashing and the ABS and ASR warning lights. Currently neither the ABS or ASR is working. The car drives perfectly and after running it to get the engine to temperature the engine shut off with the key, but the warning lights remained on.

I noticed that the brake pads are getting a little on the thin side (Probably under 5mm on them now - could the flashing light be a brake pad wear warning?)

About an hour later I restarted the car and the engine wouldn't stop with the key again. I'll stick a dehumidifier in there later and see if it helps to pull the leaked washer fluid out of wherever it's sitting as after the car was parked up a lot of condensation appeared on the inside of the windows.

It'll go to an auto electrician with the recommendation to look at the ABS controller and the ignition relay if it's still like this by the end of the week. Hopefully nothing is fried :(.

Hi, Just had a similar problem with my 1.9tdi octavia although not with as many problems and the engine did not run on.

The problem was caused by the rear washer hose blowing of its coupling in the left hand side of the boot. This connection is directlly above a load of electrical connections and a main earth. My guess is that you may find your spare wheel well full of water/washer fluid or it may be draining to the floor depending on the way yuor car is parked on a slope.

Access to the pipe is by removing the lhs rear seat side rest/ remove the bag holder in the boot and then carfully pull out the trim.

push the water pipe back on and secure with very small cable ties.

dry out the electrics and put it all back together.

Modern electronics hate water and will play havoc with the ecu with a milli-volt fault.

Cheers

I pulled the side panel off the boot and exactly as predicted, there was water collected in the corner of the boot under the popped open connection for the rear washer pipe. The connection seemed a little loose when I closed it, so I wrapped it in PTFE tape and popped it shut. The flow from the rear washer is pathetic, but it's not leaking in the wheel arch anymore.

Conveniently there was a little bung at the bottom of the wheel arch that I popped out to drain the water (Which never overflowed into the wheel well at all, explaining the lack of visible symptoms). The water had been spraying on the reverse parking sensor control box (The sensors haven't worked consistently in years anyway, so no loss) and more importantly, the control box for the trailer electrics, which is connected to the rear lights, so might be sending weird signals to the ABS/ASR module causing it to shut off (ABS and ASR aren't working at the moment).

I'll do a run around the boot with a heat gun (On low) to drive the water out of the wiring that was run through the corner where the water collected and see if the faults disappear then (The warning lights are still on and the engine still doesn't turn off consistently with the key). Hopefully this will sort it, though some of the faults may need to be cleared with VCDS/Vagcom.

The earth connection near where the water had pooled looks to be dry. I'll spray a bit of WD-40 in there once I've gone over the lot with a heat gun just in case.

Thanks to everyone for the posts so far.

By the term 'heat gun' I sincerely hope you mean your wife/girlfriend's best GHD hairdrier and not the sort of thing you use to strip paint with!!

Even on low heat they can cause serious damage to the insulation on wiring looms and this is the last thing you want!

  • Author

I can leave my hand in front of this on low, so it should be fine, but I'll be watching for damage just in case :)...

Check at the back of the engine bay just to the right of centre under the ECU for a leaking rear washer pipe there as well - they can pop off in cold weather and it might explain the low flow to the rear washer and possibly, if water has got into an ECU connection, some of the other problems...

I can leave my hand in front of this on low, so it should be fine, but I'll be watching for damage just in case :)...

Ah, you clearly have a more modern hot air gun than I. On 'low' mine will blister paint in seconds. On 'high' it just incinerates objects in its path. I dont use it much. :D

Re. the brake warning light, if your car has pad wear indicators, it should show an amber light with 'broken' brackets around it:

pad-wear-indicator-light.gif

If it's the red one with 'solid' brackets:

Brake%20warning%20light.jpg

...it could be that the handbrake switch has failed - easy enough to check and/or put right!

  • Author

Thanks for that - I was getting the ordinary red ( ! ) light, not the pad wear one.

Dried out everything I could find in the boot wiring, faults remained. Then unplugged the module for the trailer electrics from the back lights and the problem disappeared. There's no sign of any wet or damage in the module itself and all the connections look fine, so I'll have a more detailed look at it later, but the car is fixed :)... Apart from the trailer plug, but I don't tow that often and that module is easy to replace.

So the moral of the story - one short anywhere in the braking system can make a CANbus car go wrong in ways that are out of all proportion with the fault...

Any update on the repair that reached a conclusion?

Greetings for anyone who happens to arrive to this forum searching answers to Skoda won't turn off problem.

Here's my story:

Got 2011 Skoda roomster 1.2TSI .

Engine kept running even when I turned the key to the off position. Engine turned off when Reverse gear was chosen.

The problem was that the trunk wire set hat worn down and the wires were touching each other.

The wire insulation was completely worn at the place where the wires go from the car inside the trunk hatch thought the tube.

First sign of the problem actually was that the windshield wipers turned on when the trunk lid was open when the car was on.

Mechanic changed the whole wiring set. The set cost 200e, the work cost also 200.

If I had known where the problem was, some insulation tape around the wires would probably have sufficed.
