pd100 Engine temperature low, poor fuel economy?

Featured Replies

Just noticed the difference between engine temperature rising from a cold start in my 2001 Fabia TDI Elegance compared to a 2004 Bora pd150.

I know if the engine is cold you get a higher fuel usage, but whats nagging me is that my Fabia takes at least 5-10 minutes to heat up, where as the Bora heats up literally in 2 minutes of driving.

Could me Temp sensor be faulty? I have averaged 35-39mpg Local and driven carefully as well.

Cheers

The CTS could well be faulty - a VCDS scan will confirm if this is true, diesels however are very thermally efficient so need to be under load to get warm, if you are for example driving it on very light throttle then it will take a whilst to get warm, the trick is to put it under load (but not thrash it) and it will warm up quicker.

My old PD130 (Superb) used to take about 4 miles to reach 90 degrees ('normal' temperature), my current CR170 (Superb) takes a mile or two longer, I have put this down to newer technology and the CR being more thermally efficient.
