Flood in boot Mk 1 Estate.

Featured Replies

Noticed the tailgate window steaming up this past 2 wks or so . Had a look around today and found alot of water in the rear compartment that gains access to the rear lights see photos(passengers side)Dried it as the water was up to the wiring . :( it seamed to have seeped through into the carpet in the boot. Have read a few treads here about rear washer leaks. Has anybody got any photos or information as to where the washer piping is located as i think some of this must be cracked due to the cold weather. Any ideas welcome as im thinking about tackling it tomorrow

The washer pipe is wrapped up into the loom under the CD changer. To access it you will need to remove the changer - which is a few screws, iirc and a couple of plugs. I removed mine years ago and it just sits on a shelf in the garage! Unbind some of the wrapping tape on the loom and you will find a 5-6mm dia black shiny pipe. There is a joint which can pop apart, however you normally know when this has occurred as the rear window washer fails to work.

Infact looking at your pictures, you can see the joint to the right of the black connection block.

Some estate owners have reported that the light cluster to body seal is poor and can let water in too.

The blue pipe in your 3rd picture, I think is the rear sunroof drain.....

Got working on it this afternoon . Some water was going to the rear window the rest was spraying inside the panel.

Couldnt believe that the washer pipe was wrapped up in the loom. Such a place to put it, and a joint next to the connection block.

Anyhow got the job done with a cable tie. All looks fine no leaks.:thumbup:

Hosed plenty of water around the rear light cluster. All seams ok.

Took out the spare wheel to clean out the boot and noticed that i may have 2 rubber bungs missing ,one beside the spare wheel & the other under where the tailgate closes. Wondering if yours was the same?(see attached photos)

May look at insulating the washer pipe this summer for winter. last year it blew of at the bottle.

Do you know is there any more of these joints likely to give trouble?

In Lidl this morning and got some -60 windscreen wash. In case of the worst.(photo)

Many thanks for the advice. :)

I bought some of the lidl -60 stuff on Thurs  not put any in yet, running with some Asda -5 (stuff - how cr@ppy :'( )

I think my "upper" bung is missing too (as that is where *I think* I routed my towbar cable through. Not sure on the bungs under the spare wheel, but you would have to drive through one hell of a flood to get water in that way :giggle: Best to let it drain out, rather the swill around though.

Not sure I would recommend the tie-wrap solution. It is better a joint that is relatively easy to access pops apart, rather than one which you are not yet aware of.... Mine has popped apart in the past (or I parted it in error when doing my towbar), and from here I knew were to go and look - good old Brisky  I don't believe the water in the pipe freezes, I think the problem is the rear jet freezes and then the water can't get out. The pressure builds up in the pipe and one of the joints then parts company.

I have looked at heated fan jets for the front but they were quite expensive and my dealer did not have any in stock
