vRS unstable at speed!

Featured Replies

Are all your wheel nuts tight?

Mine was very stable at 150 and never had any problems with odd tyre wear :)

I'll have to contact the dealer and see what they say.....its a bit of a pain taking time to take it there-but it definately needs sorting

Any update?

Any update?

Yeah....they asked me to bring it in. Only problem is I can't get away from work until the 17th of Feb. I asked if they could fix it there and then and what equipment they had but the answer was a bit vague so I will have to go along and see what happens. I wont leave it with them-I shall wait and try to see what they will be doing to it and I'll report back

Went to the stealers yesterday, where they said I'd have to pay for the alignment check as they couldn't check to see what the car does at those high speeds. After pointing out page 4 of the warrenty leaflet (which says that Skoda will not entertain anything to do with alignments if the car is over 6 months old or has more than 6500 miles-which mine doesn't),they wouldn't budge so I agreed for them to do it and I will claim from Skoda (£48.04).....Anyway, it came back 3 hours later and they said it was ok...so now I'm thinking it must have been the road surface where I chose to try it?

PS...I rang SUK and I got the impression that they wont pay the money as it wasn't the alignment (so I suppose if it was out of line they would then say that I must have hit a pothole or something???)

The morale of this storey is that I shouls have taken it to one of these super dooper places where they don'e charge if it doesn't need any adjustments?

I'd go to a proper setup place anyway. At least you have some confidence then...

Also, do you know what geo values they used when comparing your setup with what it should be? Bet they didn't give you any evidence of a check having taken place did they?

Your right.....I didn't get any readout, the car was gone for 3 hours and the funny part is it only had one mile more than when I dropped it off to them in the first place. I think there's a good place in St Albans where they don't charge you if it doesn't need adjustment.

I'm really annoyed that they charged me £48.04 when my car is only 2 months old and has 1600 miles AND it clearly states that it should be covered on page 4 of the warrenty leaflet.....its not the money I'm worried about (although you can buy a few beers with that!), its the princible!

as i said in post 7 go to a professional outfit like wheels in motion or centergravity. They are slightly more expensive but MUCH better than the alternative kwick fit outfits. If you read that post iy tells you all the information you want to have checked and adjusted. also you should be recieving you primary and secondary data.

As he says, if they dont have it your being ripped off with bog standards toe changes

For £48 I am guessing the dealer only did a tracking check.

Go to a wheel alignment specialist who has decent optical alignment equipment and does a full four-wheel 3D alignmnet. It doesn't have to be expensive. I use Leicester 4-wheel alignment centre and they charge about £36 for a full check, with printout, and one adjustment. Additional adjustments are about £15.

That price sounds too cheap for a full alignment check. Nearer the £80 - £100 would be more like it.

LOL! Yes, plenty of places will charge that sort of money, but there are also plenty of places that will do a proper job for much less. I have been working on cars for best part of 30 years and know where to go.

The place I mention (I take many cars there, my own and those I've done work on for other people) have two John Bean aligners and you can watch them do the job, before and after printouts with primaries and secondaries. Absolutely no need to pay £100 or anything near that.

There is another place closer to where I live (won't mention their name) who also sell alloys and tyres, exhausts etc. They have a fancy waiting room and decent kit. They cheerfully take £100 of a queue of clueless punters - they're always busy. I only ever took one car there, a Mitsi FTO done at their 'trade rate' of £59. I had done a lot of work on the front suspension and so knew it was well out. Anyway, after they had worked on for 45 mins I drove it away I knew it still wasn't right. Took it back and after an argument I went through all the settings with the technician until he had done the job properly!

I've taken two cars to a place in Beverley which came recommended because they have fancy 4 wheel setup.

Both times I drove away with the car off centre. The second car I turned round at the first roundabout and took back to them to do again. It was slightly better after that but still off centre. I got the impression they didn't care all that much. I won't be going back.

The centres listed in WWW.aligmycar.co.UK are supposed to be good.

I'll give them a go after I get my money back from SUK.......is that a pig I see flying????

Mine is 13 months old, suffering sawtoothing from about 6 months old and has been back to Skoda dealer twice for alignment issues, December and february. On both occasions it was done under warranty with no questions asked.

So what's the story with Skoda and its inconsistant treatment of customers

I think you'll find that's down to individual dealers and their willingness to go back to SUK to reclaim costs that they have incurred.

After chasing SUK (I waited a week and I didn't hear anything so I contacted them), they said they would not reimburse me as the car didn't need adjustment. I tried to put my point that I was trying to get it checked in case there was something wrong and I would be saving them money if the tyres were out of alignment etc but they were'nt having none of it.

This was my first taste of Skoda service and it stinks......where do they get this 'happy driver' slogan......what a load of bo****ks!

UPDATE.....SUK rang me today (I think they were following up on a survey that I filled in). Apparently, the reason they will not refund my money now is that the car was going over the legal limit and thats why they wont entertain it!

I told them that the car should be able to go to 150mph with no problem, has tyres capable of 186mph and that they are telling me I shouldn't go past the national speed limit. I tried to explain that it didn't do what it says on the tin but they didn't budge. I also pointed out that if I were to go on the Autobans in Germany then I should be able to do any speed I wished but according to SUK that I shouldn't go above 70mph???

What a feeble excuse.......dont get me wrong, I love the car, but my first experience of Skoda customer care was frustratingly poor!

You're mad lapping that line up! You did those speeds on private farm land, not the road :giggle:

My vRS has been unstable for a while. One of the wheels on the back was wearing bad on the inside. Got it aligned. It was way off. However i have found why mine is unstable. One of the back shocks is gone, covered in oil. Maybe a weak point as mine is only an 08.

Mine is just comming up to 3 months with just 2000 miles(it was 1 month and 1000 miles when I tried it), I havn't seen any obvious wear yet, its just annoying how they take this stance-if I had the money and time I would get to an Autobahn and record it (presuming it still does it), anyone got a bit of private land in the south east where I can put my foot down?
