Which Tuning Box is Best

Featured Replies

Just some further information on tuning boxes - all they can do is increase the fuelling which will inevitably cause smoke. On a DPF equipped car this smoke doesn't exit the exhaust, but gets trapped in the DPF which can cause further problems with regens and even a saturated DPF in the worst cases.

They may be plug and play but I'm afraid they simply can't do the same job as a remap.

We don't charge to reinstall but then again we don't generally do a mobile service so I can understand others who might

If he taps you up for a STS that won't be an issue!

+1 for Ben & Shark performance! Had my car done couple of weeks ago and adore it to bits, top bloke & brilliant service :)

Anything on the 1.6 TDI CR engine :)

Afaik Ben has cracked it re: encryption but obviously he will be able to advise better.

Ben is that right?

Have you cracked the encryption so you do not have to open the ecu and flash?

Cheers Daz

No he hasnt and neither have any other tuners. All they have done is develop tools that allow them to map them with the ecu removed and opened.

You cant crack the encryption as its 1024bit and only the dealer can get the decryption key unique to each car ECU. So remapping now is done directly on booting the ECU (sort of) and taking over it.

Sorry mate, wrong choice of words!

I was told the other day by a garage owner here in Ireland that they can remap encrypted ECU's using software from oct-tuning.com, a German tuner who have supposedly cracked it? I haven't checked out their website yet as my car is done & not encrypted anyway, but I'd be interested in Ben's view of them.....

I've just been on their website and they claim to have cracked it. I could not see anywhere in their write up about the tuning being done through the serial port.

Analogue ones the last poster is refering to are rubbish....BUT

Digital ones are as good as a remap as they alter similar settings

Chris, I agree with you on this.

There are many here who are slating tuning boxes, but the modern digital ones are really good.

There are pros and cons for both tuning options.

For instance with a box, you can take it with you if you sell your car. Then you can put it in your new car or sell it on and recoup some of it's value.

Cheers

Al

Edit: You can also adjust the settings to suit your requirements
