Which Tuning Box is Best

Featured Replies

Next week i will finally get my new VRS Diesel, i was wanting to get it remapped once it was run in but I am affraid the dealers will findout when it goes for a service. I know there are a lot of plug n play tuning boxes which could be removed prior to sending it for a service. I would appreciate some advice on which work best and anybodies experience good or bad. Thanks

I don't personally have any experience of tuning boxes BUT I do know that in the time that I owned my ZT 190 and frequented the MG forums that the diesel owners swore by RoverRon. There was never a bad word said about them. I fancied getting one for my diesel Saab but was concerned about the insurance implications so eventually decided to give it a miss.

Here's the link to RoverRon:

Dont bother with the tunning boxes as normaly they just increase fuel pressure and trick the coolent sensor that its colder than it actualy is, Just go for a reputable remap like Revo and pay a bit extra and have the select plus so you can turn the remap on and off when you like, you can even use the select plus to immobilise the car if you need to leave it. Agood dealer wont even say anything about a remap unless something goes wrong with the engine that was caused by the remap,(which doesnt normaly happen these days, Mine was done from brand new and its now nearly 4 years old with no remap issues) And even then its a warranty covered by skoda not the dealer so they would be doing themselves out of possible work. Previously i had a Mondeo st tdci (156 bhp diesel) and i ran a reputable power box on and it caused some running issues, Diesel knock, idleing probs etc. Go for a remap you wont be dissapointed.

Analogue ones the last poster is refering to are rubbish....BUT

Digital ones are as good as a remap as they alter similar settings

I would strongly recommend you get in touch with Ben (Shark_90) on here, or visit his web site Shark Performance and get him to sort you out with an STS and a stage 1 remap, completely switchable when the service looms etc, etc.

+1 for Shark

And my car has been in for warranty work and they know its been remapped as the test driver who took it out this week was like "My god this feels bloody quick" :giggle:

On another note i think I am suffering from the dreaded alignment woes :(

Well done Chris.............the first owner of a Mk3 Octavia..............did I miss the launch? ;)

Amen to that - a remap is definitely the way to go, and Ben's service is second to none

+2 for Ben@Shark. Forget any kind of "boxes". A proper ECU remap is the way, not some box fooling the fuel pump to push more fuel.

the only reason people go for performance boxes(resistor in a box affairs) is because they are cheaper

If removing the map at service time is important to you then that IMO gives you2 options. Shark performance with their STS handset, and bluefin with their handset.

Both will allow you to add or remove the standard/performance maps from your car at your own leisure. It takes about ten minutes. And all of this can be done at home.

This is a how to guide of using the STS handset(similar for bluefin)- plug into car, it copies the original map. you email map to either shark/superchips/they tweak whats needed, email it back to you, then using the handset you put it back on your car. simple as that.

Ive had bluefin and shark performance. My vote would be for shark. i found the bluefin really underperfomed in comparison to the opposition, whereas the shark performance didnt, performance was bang on.STS handset how to guide

REVO will not be any good for this, as whilst you can change the settings of it when ever you want to emulate the stock output, its still not the stock map, its a REVO equivalent.

Shark are not offering the STS system for their remaps at the moment.

Unusual..how come?

its all dependant if the ECU is encrypted you wont know until they try

I thought both the CR and TSI had the same problem with the encrypted ECU.

As far as I know no one has yet been able to crack it while it is still in the car meaning it has to be removed from the car to remap and can not be switched via the handset. I could be wrong on this as I am sure it will be cracked sooner or later.

From what i gather some ECUs are encrypted and some arent.

Speaking to REVO/JKM and others it seems that its not really possible to tell by ECU types/serial numbers etc, as some have the encryptions and some dont.

This, the man knows his stuff! :)

All FL (Spring:2010) seem to have encrypted ECU, diesel or petrol. My 1.8TSi (week 16) is encrypted too, but 20min job sorted it out.

I have only had my Snow Monster for a month, but after 2200 miles I took it to Shark Performance and Ben remapped it for me. I have used boxes in the past, but not impressed with them. The remap is way superior in my humble opinion.

My CR140 has been remapped to about 180/185bhp & 440Nm torque.

The process is well documented in This thread as he had to perform open heart surgery emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Yes a dealer will know that the car has been remapped and I'm not hiding from them. My supplying dealer knows I have had it done. I am not worried. What is the problem other than them telling your insurance company, which I have done. What can the remap do to damage the engine - speak to Ben at Shark.

If in any doubt, speak to the best person you can - Ben at Shark Performance. He is the expert and will tell you how it is. If you give him the work great, if you don't give him the work, great. He just gives the best advice around. But note that he is at the Autosport exhibition at the moment, so if you don't get a quick reply don't worry. best to PM or email him.

An extremely satisfied customer.

Mike

Afaik Ben has cracked it re: encryption but obviously he will be able to advise better.

I have spoke to Shark and he has told me that even with the std map re installed that the dealers could trace it if they wanted to, also what happens after a service if they have done a software up grade which has happened to me with my current VRS?

Ben will have his own ideas on this but the firm that remapped mine will come to me for 25 quid and reinstall the map if the stealer flashes the ECU!

Which dealership did you have the warranty work done through?

Another vote for Ben @ Shark. Top service from a top bloke.

Don't worry about the dealer finding out about the remap, only if it can be proven that the remap caused a warranty problem can they refuse to honour the warranty. Life is too short to worry about that sort of thing.

We don't charge to reinstall but then again we don't generally do a mobile service so I can understand others who might
