R32 ARB... onto VRS

Featured Replies

Hey guys.

Just sourced an R32 ARB for my VRs which has a Dodgy ARB fitted.

Obviously i'm going to need new Bushes too, which i'm opting for Powerflex.

First, Is it the 23mm ones i'll need to order?

Secondly, Do i need anything else?

Thirdly - I also have a rear one, is this any use to me at all?

Cheers

David

if it's the 23mm front ARB then you'll need the 23mm bushes, what rear ARB have you got? as it not advisable to fit the front without fitting a rear as it buggers the handling.

if it's an R32 rear ARB you also have it wont fit the the vrs im afraid! you'll need to look at getting an after market one

just dont fit the front without fitting a rear

Nope mate only bushes will be needed. The R32 rear bar is no good unless for a 4x4.

Lovely, thanks guys :)

Is it only Aftermarket ones available, or do they do one for a Mk4 without 4x4?

The R32 Rear will obviously be back up for sale then, but they came as a pair.

I'll get some 23mm Powerflex Bushes next then.

I won't be fitting for a while, until i have the bushes for one, and until i can sort a couple of other bits out at the same time.

Cheers

Will do, thanks buddy

New drop links whilst there doing the job?

I believe r32 ones fit also

Not going to bother, because in the NEAR future i plan to have coilys and adjustables anyway

I have £800 to spend on car insurance on Feb12, and an MOT due April 26 so i'm doing necessary bits first up :)

Also, I've seen an Audi A3 Rear ARB on ebay..

BUT - They have Drop links.

Is this correct?

Or does the A3 ARB not fit my Rear?

I don't want to spend as much as to go aftermarket, unless i can find a used one somewhere, but i may need one anyway.

Do rears come with Drop links then? or only on some cars?

I'm assuming the A3 has independant rear suspension making that ARB useless for my car?

Just i can't see where a Rear ARB would fit on mine, or to be honest, what benefit it'd hold?

Those collies will still need drop links unless you mean you will buy them when you get the collies

The VRS does have a RARB internal into the beam that is not very solid which is why people fit a aftermarket one. This is not the same set up as below cars.

Audi TT / Audi S3 / Skoda 4x4 and Golf R32 (all the VAG 4x4 models) all share a similar rear set up that has a external RARB. Thise will not fit a 2 wheel drive octy / VRS.

You have not posted the link but if it is a A3, either owner has got it wrong and should have posted S3 or they have purchased an after market RARB which if that is the case would also fit the VRS. But please post link if you are unsure...

After market RARB's fit to the lower section of the rear beam and have links either side to bolt to the rear shock brackets on the rear wishbones.

See this pic of mine as an example..

Yeah, I'll buy them when i buy the coilies mate, Adjustables :)

And legend for that - I'll post the link for the a3 one here..

A3 1.8t Rear ARB from a 2000: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Audi-A3-1-8-T-Rear-Anti-Roll-Bar-/260694338200?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cb297ea98#ht_1141wt_905

Thanks for the pics, Makes more sense now all round - Did you need the Subframe Dropped to fit the Front ARB?

Thats the main reason i'm dreading it!

Shame the R32 Rear won't fit - That'd kill 2 birds with one stone there, I'll have to sell that.

Right that now explains it. The numpty who is advertising that Rear ARB is actually advertising a FARB with front drop links that attach to the front struts. So don't get it as you have that same type already on the front.

Yes the subframe does need dropping to change the FARB. Not hard but you will need to replace the subframe bolts as they are stretch bolts.

I must admitt, I did check and re-check he was listing a Rear one...

What a bellend!

Ok, so new Subframe Bolts, ARB Bushes and thats all i'll need.

Can the Subframe bit be done on the Drive? - I'll be doing it at home once I have all parts.

Don't suppose you have a part number for the Bolts?

Cheers

Yep can be done on drive as i did it on axles stands.

I did a guide somewhere will dig it out and also stated bolts, etc

Ledge!

I've a lot to learn :)

The idiot who did mine before, Took the time to take the bushes out, wrap the ARB in tape, and put them back, so as you can imagine, it handles like a boat!

Roll on 23mm ARB :)

if i may butt in on the feed and also ask some advice

just got an R32 fARB but the plastic collar has gone one one side (second hand one)

I was told that you can take the plastic collars off and put smaller size bushes on???

any ideas

thanks

andy

Having said that

I was the proud owner of a broken arb so I decided to modify it and welded metal collars onto it!! Obviously taking off the plastic ones.

I've bought 19mm bushes as the bar is 20mm and they seem to be quite a good fit

Gonna have a go at fitting it Tuesday so I'll let you know how it goes, I have taken some pics but I cannot work out how to put them on here

Interesting are you sure it is a R32 one as they do not have plastic collars like the std 19mm VRS ones, all they have is platsic end stops that stop the FARB shifting from side to side through the bushes.

Hope so as mine had both missing then... :dull:

You can see in my last pic of the FARB, the end stop against the inner side of the bush/bracket

SkodaVRSARBreplacement041.jpg

on the std VRS the collars are plastic and they are common to break and folks do indeed fit a smaller inner diameter bush to the ARB and thus collars not needed

Edited by Bowders1

Mines not got any collars mark so your safe :giggle: just the 2 stops so it can't move about.

Also the R32 bar is 23mm not 20mm so your 19mm bushes won't fit.

Is it possible the v6 4 motion arb is different?? As that could be the it's 20 without the plastic where as the skoda one is 17mm I think??

Either way both have plastic collars, well it did until I modified it

  • Author

Skoda one is 19mm matey, I'll be removing mine soon.

The 4 Motion i'd have thought would be the same / similar to the R32 one, which will fit the VRS (I may be wrong there).

My understanding is that the VRS / R32 Share a different setup to the Standard Mk4 Golf etc...

I'm really baffled as to why the rear one won't fit though?

God only knows what I've got!! It looks the same but it fractionally thicker I'm hoping that the modified collars will stop that f@#king clicking noise though

Mine knocks and goes, hence the excuse to upgrade it - Mine might actually on inspection be fine, and just the bushes naffed, but i'm sure not doing the job twice, and my new ARB was dirt cheap :)

My modded arb went on today and it's a different car the new arb is 2mm thicker and has the welded collars I would highly recommend it!!

No knocking no crappy broken plastic

Best thing I've done
