Skoda Octavia Diesel v Fabia Petrol Economy

Featured Replies

I've got a brand new 51kW Fabia petrol on loan for a few days ,while my Octavia 140 has a new turbo under warranty.

Last time I ran a petrol car on my daily 24 mile commute, 37 mpg was the norm.

The Fabia is getting 42mpg uphill to Buxton and 55mpg downhill (on computer thingy) to Chesterfield. At the moment the Octavia is doing 44mpg and up to 60mpg respectively. Speeds are constrained by other traffic both ways and I go with the flow.

I know that is a short and inaccurate comparison but am very impressed with the mpg of the 5 speed HTP engine. Certainly it does not have huge hill climbing grunt ,but is adequate and much faster than the 1.2l Corsa slug and almost as quick as SWMBO 1.4l Getz.

Might think of a petrol engine next time if the turbo problem is not cured.

What's a 51kw Fabia?

What's a 51kw Fabia?

70 horsepower.

Nice little engine with a nice little note to it. It is the lack of torque that I find frustrating so the 85 hp or 105 hp TSI I would prefer to get, in Monte Carlo spec but I expect we may have to get the HTP engined car as the insurance is much lower for the younger drivers. What we need is a one litre or 900 cc TSI engine producing around 75 hp but with the fantastic torque of the TSIs ie nice to drive and cheap insurance. Whilst I pay less than £300 for the TSI VRS, 1,8 TSI DSG and 130 hp Octy 1 I expect the kids will be quoted grand or 2 for the small engined Fabia. If the Monte Carlo does not look too good ie like the rest of the road going MK 2 Fabias, then it might have to be a Suzuki Swift.
