VRs TDI Front brakes

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I need to change the front brake discs and pads on my 56 plate VRS PD170 Estate. The local motor factor gave me a choice of 3 sizes (280,288 and 312mm) of disc diameter. I havent been able to measure them as yet so could anyone give me a definite size for these discs?

Also, its the first set i've had to fit since i've had the car so can anyone offer any advice as to what brand to use/avoid and are there any pitfalls or schoolboy errors to be made in doing the job?

Thanks.

I was always under the impression they are 312 i could be wrong i'm new to Skoda's but not VAG i have the same 312mm discs on my caddy and 288 on the rear

I use www.vwspares.co.uk for my pads.

Almost certainly 312mm at the front and 288mm at the rear. Personally I have used Brembo discs with Jurid pads from GSF and Pagid discs with Pagid pads from a local supplier. I prefer the Pagid as the discs come fully painted, so look manky much less quickly. All are OE suppliers to VAG / BMW so you won't go far wrong.

I personally prefer Mintex - they are very low on dust and seem to last well.

Not tried them on the Octy yet though ................

For standard Mintex, give these guys on ebay a call - I have used them before and the prices were very good. I got mine a little cheaper as I collected them - they are a proper trade outfit and seem to specialise in brakes, wipers, spark plugs and batteries.

Front are 312 and i wouldn't bother with anything other than the plain (OEM style) disks unless you're going to be seriously tracking it.

I've just changed from the OEM 312mm discs to some Brembo 312mm discs as they were about the same price as the OEM's but come with the Brembo heritage  These also came on next day delivery.

I'm running these mated to some Tarox Strada pads and I'm really pleased with them.

As for changing them, I followed this guide although on my car I needed a 21mm spanner and not an 18mm spanner also the t35 was also incorrect for mine and it is a t30 that fitted.

Keep some WD40 ready to spray onto the caliper carrier bolts to help with undo'ing them, if they are anything like mine you will also need a lump hammer to aid in undoing them.
