Upgrade to 312mm VRS front brakes

Featured Replies

After my remap at Shark, I am thinking of doing the sensible thing and upgrading the front brakes (suspension upgrades to follow, but that will be some time away yet!)

So, what parts do I need to upgrade to the 312mm front discs on my PD140?

I know I need new discs and pads, and the different caliper carriers.

But, is that it?

Do I need longer flexible brake hoses at the front?

If I buy two carriers and a set of discs and pads is that all I need?

Anyone know the part numbers for the carriers, or a good source for them used? I have seen refurbed calipers and carriers on ebay, but I thought the calipers were the same so I only need the carriers - no point buying refurbed calipers if there is nothing wrong with the ones I have!

All advice welcome!

Oh, and they will fit fine with 16" OEM alloys??? (Can't afford a set of 17s or 18s and tyres)

Edit: Are the rear discs the same - don't want to end up altering the brake bias if the VRS has larger rear discs as well?

I have a 312mm setup in my garage if you want them (they're green, and come without discs and pads)

Talk about hijack my thread

Depends what you have just now you might just need carriers and discs, i have done the 312mm upgrade on my caddy van all i needed was carriers & discs then painted then hammerite smooth red absolute perfect match for the mk5 Gti caliper colour.

Octy2 with the 288mm front discs, PD140 engine.

My understanding was discs, pads, carriers was all that would be needed.

I have a concern that moving the caliper further away from the hub MIGHT mean it needs a slightly longer brake hose though - just need someone who has done the upgrade on an Octy2 to confirm.

All you need is 312mm Carriers, 312mm Discs and the pads required are the same for the 288mm and 312mm setup.

Its a dead simple swap,

once your car is on the jack (with axel stand too) and wheel removed

remove the spring clip

remove the plastic bungs on the back of the calipers

undo the x2 7mm bolts then remove the caliper (use something to rest the caliper on.. extra axel stand in the wheel arch)

undo the 21mm caliper carrier bolts and remove the 288mm carrier

undo the t30 torx holding the disc on

then refit in the reverse order adding your new disc and pads

They will fit fine behind 16" wheels and fill the wheel nicely. I havent noticed and major difference in the bais and havent upgraded my rear brakes.

I have these also, although I got a complete kit including pipes from a user on another Forum. Braking is much improved, a little front bias is better to compensate for the extra weight there on our dervs!

AFAIK, you will need (as mentioned) Discs, Caliper Carriers and that is all you essentially need, although it depends how your pads are, budget for some good brake fluid while you are at it!

Cheers Darren.

So it looks like I need to find just some carriers then.
