thats a big margin, 45% i can live with, 30??? ouch

Depends on the model, you will usually see most superminis retain 50% value after 3 years. Fabia seems to do a bit better than that.

Just looked at that, ends up 5800 quid, about 55% loss ish, ouch

50% sounds about right.

Plus whatever you spent on optional extras, because you normally lose that too.

Depreciation is the major cost if you buy a new car, especially if you want to sell it in the early years. How many miles will you do in 3 years? Work out your depreciation cost per mile and per year and ask yourself whether you can live with those figures. If you can't, work out the depreciation cost (and cost per mile) for 5 years and see if that makes you feel better. Most Fabias will run trouble free for many more than 5 years average mileage. Just replaced a Fabia 1.9 TDI after 5 years and 44 000 trouble free miles. Depreciation was minimised by buying for as little as I could pay (internet broker), looking after the car and having it serviced regularly, and selling it privately. Cost £10 500, sold for £4050 (probably would have got £4200+ if I'd tried a bit harder). Depreciation £6450, 14.7p per mile, £1290 per year. My second car is a Jaguar X type diesel which cost £25000+ new. I bought it with 17 000 miles on the clock when it was 3 years old from an independent dealer for £11 450. The previous owner lost £13550 (plus the dealer's profit but we'll ignore that), it cost him 79.7p per mile, £4517 per year. I've now had the car 3 1/2 years, it has been completely reliable and I expect to sell it in 18 months time for around £4000. Depreciation £7500, £1500 per year.

If everyone did these simple calculations many car dealers would probably go out of business. You pays your money and you takes your choice!

Sounds like an absolute bargain, losing 3k in 18 months while car is still under warrenty. Most cars will lose more from new. That's less than £30 a week!

My old Range Rover (which I bought second hand) lost 32k in 2 years and 26k miles from new.

My Fabia Greenline (recently bought new) I'd also expect to lose more than 3k in 18 months.

Even my Dad's Galaxy Ghia lost 11k in 3 years and 25k miles, and that was bought at 3k under list price as it was a month old cancelled order!

I'd be over the moon with 3k loss.

See parkers.co.uk 2011 depreciation report which shows first year depreciation for 100 least depreciating cars in 2010. Fabia Hatchback comes in at 71st with a £3518 depreciation figure or 39%. Superb is listed too but can't recall figures.

On a new/nearly new car... I would be.

I've seen some hideous depreciation on cars I've had.

The moral here is, if you don't want to lose money when you sell in 3 years time, buy an old classic car!

Anew car will lose around a greand, soon as your name goes on the log bok and you drive it out the showroom!

CT17 - You have a Camel Trophy spec Landy??! B)

Hum, although the depreciation looks and is great in the first year, with a new car as soon as you sign the dotted line you lose the VAT.

The VAT on a Greenline II Est is £2,289.17 if it then the car lost another £1000 in the first year for wear and tear then the first year depreciation would be £3289.17 of book price or 23%
