18 year old test driving a vRS?!

Featured Replies

My mum is genuinely thinkning of buying another car within a year. What do you think the chances of test driving a Fabia vRS would be for an 18 year old to take it out for a day alone?

If your mum is 18 how old are you?

Probably very slim to none alone - but i'm sure you could make enough money by the fact your mum is 18 and you are able to post on briskoda. Thats quite an achievement for a 4 year old :D

although your spelling of thinking with an extra n may lose you some brownie points :D

All seriousness now :) - i think they are slim to doing it alone, but i'm sure the dealer wouldnt mind tagging along to make sure that its all well.

Slim!!!

Car dealers have to pay lots in insurance, your mum might get it for a day but I very much doubt you will. I'll doubt that you would even get it for a few hours on your own.

Ask yourself this would you give your car to a 18 year old that you dont know?

If anybody is interested in my 10 pennies worth, i asked my local dealer for a full days test drive and evaluation on an Octy VRS when i was looking to replace my company car, answer NO! Well not unaccompanied anyway, so i told them to stick it and i will go elsewhere. Some may say they find that a bit harsh but hey i'm over 30 been driving since i was 16 and i was serious about the motor. Plus a local Honda dealer several years ago when i asked to test drive a Civic VTEC gave me the keys and said 'go enjoy' a couple of years later the same dealer when asked if i could test drive a Civic Type R said the same thing, keys and enjoy! When i challenged my not so friendly Skoda dealer why they would not do same i was met with 'Well we are part of a Subaru dealer and wev'e had a couple of Scoobies nicked' Fair comment but hey, i ask you. Now an 18 year old unaccompanied is another thing

I test drove one when I was 18,

Dress smarter, act older, and be confident :)

Thanks for the useful advice, just to clarify I'm 18, my mums 51!

Fair enough at 30 you would have thought they may have come to some agreement. When I test drove the fabia the first time, the guy just gave me the keys and said "bring it back in an hour, have fun, but it's still tight"

My local Skoda/Subaru dealer has had this problem, though I didn't have a problem when I came to have my test drive in both a scooby and the Fabia, but then they knew me abit! (I'm a bit of a scooby fan! :D )

Sofung86, good luck with gettin it for the day and have fun, do watch out it is a very quick car and can catch you with all that touque ;)

Umm 18 - 4 years =14

14 - 9 months = 13 and a bit

Not sure if that's even legal in Holland!! :D

lol true but like thats stop "some" people!

Lol and that was me making it an extreme case :D - however his mum "could" have been 18 years and 11 months old at the opposite extreme.

Sorry about the age jokes - small things :)

I test drove the vRS when it came out, and i am 21 now. so i cant remember how old i was when i drove it, but i'm sure someone can work it out :) - i went to a local small dealer who basically know my dad and family. I've driven cars which they would only let you drive at a dealer at 21 without showing my licence (not skodas) so its just a matter of luck really.

It is a pain at 18 when you can legally insure the car but cant test drive it, best option is to dress in a suit and pick a nice dealer. Has worked for an 18 year old mate wanting to test a lotus elise :) - but thats going back a few years now

No worries about the age joke! Where a suit? Is that not a bit overkill? I'm thinking that if i rang up before hand to book the test drive, then drove up myself and parked outside where they can visibily see me, chances would be in my favour. Did you manage to test drive them on your own davidcollins01? So far, it just sounds like if i get lucky!

It is luck really. I went for a drive, and it was my dad testing the car, but i also drove it. Just me and my dad in the car. The dealer is a very laid back dealer - so it is as you say luck. Just tell them you have an intention of buying (dont say when ;)). Gets any salesmans ears pricking :)

what about skoda's 24h test drive? your mum can pick it up, or if you dont want her to know someone else..... then you can drive it once they have it?

... on whose insurance? Seriously I've only ever had one unaccompanied test drive and that was last year at the age of 47 in a Toyota...

Thats for the new Skoda Octi is it not? Unless that has changes since I last went to skoda's website.

It would be on the dealers insurance, make sure you check what the excess is though as it can be steep!!

Yep Octy II and Superb I think :D

Most dealers (around here anyway) require you to be 21 before they will insure you on their cars, which seems a bit silly really as you could have 10k in the bank and be in a position to buy. Saying that, the only car I looked at that I wasn't allowed unaccompanied in was a Scooby, but I didn't buy that one cos the salesman tried to kill us and several children showing us what it could do along a road during school turning out time  Ironically, the Scooby I did buy I bought privately and the couple let us take it out on our own  Noticed the curtains were twitching when we got back though, so they were obviously nervous about it! :D

Chris

Yes, the 24h test drive is for the new shape octy.

Someone came in asking for a 24h furby test drive when I was collecting mine, and promptly got told to do one, in the nicest possible manner of course :)

The dealers explained that the octy's used for 24h test drives are supplied and insured by Skoda UK, not the dealers themselves who have to provide the other test drive cars. Understandably, they arent prepared to pay for and insure cars for people to take out (irrespective of age I guess) and rag for 24h - especially vRS's.

... but an 18 year old? I've both had to have Named drivers only on a loan car and drivers over 25 - hence my original query...

Yes but some 13 year olds can be so juicey......................look am only joking before you bite my head off.

True Chris there are sometimes age limits on the insurance policy, and if not then the excess is usually fairly high.

I've only once had trouble gettin a test drive, and that was with MG, I wanted to test drive the ZS and the ZT as I was thinking of buying one (ok dont start on me they are nice cars) but the dealer whated

Posting a ladies true age

I think someone has just blown their chances of asking mum to " borrow " a vRs so they can drive it. :D

Now if you knock 10 yrs of a mums age you'd ALMOST guarantee getting a go

Ive had 4 unaccompanied test drives, 3 when I was 18, one when I was 19.
