1.2 tsi engine

Featured Replies

Hi all, I was just wondering what this engine is like? Does it struggle in such a big car? Also what about any modifications to the engine?

Thanks

Well its got load of torque because of the turbo.

even the 85 hp and even more so the 105 hp one has quite respectiable acceleration ie 10.5 seconds to 60 mph is not so shabby compared to most cars that use to have 1.6 litre non turbo engines.

Modders have only just started but 20 or 30% is likely to be the possible increase like it is with the 1.4, 1.8 and 2 litre TSIs. If it is a stroked version of the 1,4, like the 1,8 is of the 2 litre, then it should be very strong indeed.

The 1.4 is the asmatic version with little torque. Lovely exhaust note but hard work but if insurance is a killer then it may be the only option but the fuel consumption and performance stink by comparison to the wonderful TSIs.

I've driven it in Yeti and it was fine around town, quiet eager, but struggled a bit on motorway, a bit slow on overtakes. Give it a good test drive before you purchase.

Also what sort of mpg people are getting?

Try Yeti section as more people there have 1.2 engine.

When looking at the Yeti forum, one thing to bear in mind is that the Yeti fuel economy suffers more at higher speeds than it will in the Octavia, simply because the Yeti has poor aerodynamics and the resultant drag follows a power law as speed increases. People claim that the relatively poor economy at motorway speed is due to the 1.2 being underpowered at motorway speeds- I think it is mainly aerodynamics. I and many others find it extremely relaxed on the motorway. Also, MPG depends massively on driving style. It might be worth you having a look at the following european site...

Here you can compare some real world figures that people are getting with both cars with the same engine. For example, in the Octavia, with manual gearbox, the overall average for all cars registered is 6.96 l/100km (40.6 mpg), whereas in the Yeti it is 7.26 l/100km (38.9mpg). With DSG the figures are 36.1mpg for the Octavia and 37.2mpg for the Yeti. The DSG figure for the Octavia may be artificially high as it is only based on 5 cars, whereas the others are based on between 24 and 37 cars (as of today). The average on that site for the Octavia with the manual 1.9TDi is around 47.5mpg - I think the 1.2TSi compares well !

We have a Yeti 1.2 DSG and over 5300 miles of varied motoring the overall average is 37.5mpg (calculated using brim-to-brim measurements) which is essentially the same as the average from that web site. A summer trip to the Lakes and the Scottish Highlands with 2 small adults, an 11 year old and the rest of the car jam packed with camping gear (but no roof box) was no problem for the Yeti - it swallowed the hills without any problem. It was also very good cruising on the motorway. The acceleration is not as good as in a large engined car, but it is massively better than you would expect from a 1.2 engine, and I have never wished that I had a bigger engine. Best to have a test drive in a Yeti 1.2 to get an idea if it suits you (I am guessing there are not many 1.2 Octavias around).

Hope that helps
