yeah i am actually tempted but really haven't got the funds available thanks to now owning a PastyWagon #2.

I'd love to do the insides of the spokes in red just to jazz thinks up a bit.

I'm thinkning the second set may have some playing before deciding on anything final. I have tins of silver and green hammerite just sat there doing nothing :)

I think rather than doing the inside of all the spokes doing just the inside of the V's would be better, less fussy.

How is the finish on these holding up Cliff?

How is the finish on these holding up Cliff?

Given the small amount of lacquer i put on (cos i found it a pig to work with) really well.

I have realised that using white primer under black paint was a stupid idea as it stands out a mile when they do get chipped etc.

They have picked up a few day to day stone chips but most of the damage has been caused by tyre monkeys when putting rubber on or suprisingly when putting the centre caps back in!

I'm still happy with them as they stand but might chance in due course.

Having used my experience here I've redone my second set into silver and am yearing for light wheels again.

These are also a much much better finish (loads less scratchy) so I clearly learnt something doing the black ones :)

I think i'll stick with the blacks for now and once the silver spiders are sold start a silver refurb on a set of delacquered set of Golf Montreal 2's that have been sat in mt father in laws farage for 18 months ;)

Looking very good B)

cracking read and im going to do mine now.

  • 1 year later...

Hi, sorry to bump an old thread. Wheels look great and Im thinking of doing mine myself - they're spare wheels so time isnt an issue :)

Just wondering what lacquer you used, and how it is holding up? I must admit Im worried about getting the tyres fitted although the place I use are usually very careful.

Also Im wanting to spray them orange (repsol orange or similar) are there any packs out there like the Simoniz packs that include orange paint?

The lacquer is the worrying part for me, dont want to spend ages on doing the wheels for them to get wrecked putting tyres on :(

Thanks!

I find my black wheels scratch easily too! Even when I just rub my finger on them!

i did mine last week. with lacquer lots of very light coats is the only way. 6 to 8 idealy and allow lots of time to harden in a warm place. when it comes to fitting tyres a smear of washing up liquid around the lip helps a lot

I used the Simoniz clear coat from the same supplier as the Simoniz spray.

I did use white primer under the black which meant and damage was instantly obvious.

These were the first ones I did and I didn't use much lacquer so they damaged quite easily.

The silver ones I did above got sold and the colour changed again by professionals before they went on a car.

The gold ones I did I'd learnt my lesson and went through about 8 cans of clear with plenty of coats.

I just used a couple of cans on each wheels and bob was my mothers brother.

They've subsequently fared much better than the original set of black ones for stone chips and damage, although have been kerbed load more

Cool thanks, Im just trying to figure out how many cans of primer, paint and lacquer I need for each wheel, and what the costs would be.

I can get them professionally done for £190 all in, and then I wouldnt have to worry about tyre numpties.

i used half can of primer half can of colour and over half can of lacquer on each rim.

you can get black high build primer in rattle cans which is ideal for black wheels

Hi Cliff,

Sorry to bump your thread again but i'm thinking about refurbing just the insides of the Evolo's i've picked up because of corrosion and the faces are near perfect. Might be an obvious answer to my question but did you primer the insides of your wheels or just sand and spray, as some websites i read don't mention primer??

Did you also use any alloy repair putty/filler on the corroded areas??

Hi John

Because I stripped mine all the way back to almost bare metal all over I primed the whole lot inside and faces so that the paint had at least somethnig to stick to.

The corrosion on the faces once i'd scraped the bubbles off and sanded them down they were generally ok.

If there was any bad pitting i used the alu filler stuff and sanded that back.

With the insides i didn't bother filling them just wire wheeled all the corrosion off and primed over the top of what was left.

In my mind the insides never get seen so why worry to much about the final finish.

As long as the corrosion was stopped - which wire brushing and sanding it right back then priming and painting should do - the insides were finished in my opinion

Cheers Cliff.

Need to get some primer ordered to go with everything else then. :)

Exactly why i'm going to attempt it myself. Even if the finish isn't great, it won't matter too much.

To be honest a full DIY refurb on Evolos would be one of the easiest to do.

5 big wide flat spokes? pfft give us a challenge!

I know, i just can't be bothered!! :D

I've got a set of standard 16" Fabia vRS alloys that need refurbed if you fancy a challenge.

And my 17" spiders will need doing when they're off the car and tyres taken off them. :D

I used to do this alot a few years ago.  Below are some examples of all garage diy jobs
