New vRS estate - questions

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just have a couple of questions about the vRS estate. Wondering if anyone thats driven one/has one might be able to answer them: -

* What does it ride like? Is the ride particularly firm. Having a little person on board is the main concern, dont want to rattle its brains out!

* Does it drive much differently to the hatch? Can't imagine it does but think its worth knowing (think i'm probably only going to be able to test a hatch).

* Are they fairly docile to drive? I'll answer this myself next weekend but be interested on peoples thoughts. Being a highly strung small engine with DSG wondering if it just wants to go into rocketship mode all the time. This wouldnt bother me but it would bother the wife I expect.

* Do they run OK on normal unleaded? Aware that you should really run them on super but not sure if we will much if at all.

* Is the boot bigger if you dont have a spare wheel?

At the moment we've whittled down our choices to a vRS or a 1.2 TSi Elegance with or without DSG (decision still to be made).

I'm pushing the wife for a vRS; am a bit of a petrol head and for purely selfish reasons would like the car to deliver some weekend fun as well as being a practical family estate. As nice as the 1.2 will be (given I could have an Elegance with a bit of spec and get a lot of change) I fear it may be a bit boring by comparison. Would again be interested to hear your views.

As is stands if we go for a vRS I'll be going Candy White with Dark Chrome wheels, parking sensors and leccy rear windows. Not decided on the 1.2 yet for obvious reasons!

Roll on next weekend, i'll update soon!

I didn't find the ride crashy but again I've only tested a hatch and bought a hatch so I'm not sure if the estate is diffrent but I can't see it being that much diffrent though I've only realy driven cars with sports suspension before a VW fox.

VRS has a spare wheel as standard and I've said it before and I'll say it again after having been stuck waiting for 2 hours in the cold and rain with a honda with these stupid tyre kits I'll never drvie a car without a proper spare again.

In my opinion the VRS and the DSG can be driven in very dosile style in drive mode and with a light right foot.

I believe it can be run on 95 but you'll lose performance

Get the elegance its awesome 1.6crtdi 105bhp in black of courseB)

The spare is in a well under the boot floor. With or without it, the boot space is the same.

Go for the vRS.

Why would you go for anything less

Hi guys,

Thanks for your responses.

Yeah I'll be honest if it were entirely up to me it would be the vRS all the way, but it will be the Wifes car and i'll be letter her make the ultimate decision as she's got to be happy with it. We preference the 1.2 petrol over the 1.6 CR as ultimately its a bit quicker as well no doubt being quieter. Also the car wont be doing big mileage (rarely more than 20 miles a day during the week) so I dont think we'll get huge benefits from a diesel; also whilst DPF's aren't as problematic as they used to be dont really want to take the chance on one just in case it gives us issues.

I have a 2.0 TDi CR Golf and I have to say whilst it is very quiet compared to the old PD units it's still not quite petrol quiet. Also I'm not sold on the way the new CR engines deliver their power, certainly in my cars case its almost too linear. I'd love to remap it but its a company car so leaving it well alone!

I'm just hoping she'll like the sporty drive and extra performance of the vRS and be sold on it. I'm more than happy to give up Climate and Cruise Control for the sake of a better drive!....Still she could hate both! :-(

Ah thats the other thing I was going to ask.....are the factory fit mats worth the money on the vRS. I've seen other posts advising they are pretty awful. Wondering if i'd be better off getting some from our stealer.

The ride is firm but won't require frequent visits to the osteopath! :D

I own a vRS estate and I extensively test drove a vRS hatch on two occasions. I cannot tell any difference in the handling, noise, etc. between the two body types.

Yes, you can drive it in a docile manner - I do this most of the time. Ah, the joys of the DSG... :)

I haven't tried it on 95 unleaded but I believe you can do so at the expense of performance.

The vRS comes with a spare as standard. If you are insane enough to go for the tyre weld kit I guess you would gain a few extra litres of next to useless boot space as it would be under the carpet and difficult to access.

I asked for mats and these were thrown in for free by the dealer - they're the standard ones with Fabia written on them.

Cheers for that, is certainly helping to put my mind at rest! Agree on the spare tyre & mats, will be doing the same
