205 40 17's or 225 35 17's on Octy spiders ?

Featured Replies

Hi

Soon I'll be fitting the 17" spiders off my Octy vRS onto the wifes fabia vRS, and I'm trying to sort out what tyres I need.

From what I've read on here, the choice of tyre size most people seem to fit to the 17" spiders is 205 40 R17, but this gives an overall dia increase of + 5mm (+ 0.85%).

One other option would be to fit 225 35 R17, and this would give an overall dia decrease of - 2mm (-0.34%).

Now to me the 225 35 R17 option looks (on paper at least) to be the better choice and comes closest to matching the original tyre spec 205 45 R16, and aso has an additional benefit that I would'nt need to lower the car with these tyres on, but I defo would if we fitted the 205 40R17's.

But....... will they fit....... without rubbing the wings, arches etc ????? anybody fitted them befor ?????

Thanks

Bill.

Go for either 205/40 or 215/40

I would assume that 205-40 would be a lot cheaper than 225-35 and for the difference it would make not worth the extra cost imo emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I'm using 215/40/17 once my spiders are refurbed. When I bought them two had 205's the others 215's. The 215's had done a better job of protecting the edge of the rim from stone chips.

205/40/17 is optimal tyre... I always use this size.

Octy wheels are a pidly 7 inch wide 225's would be too big for them possibly

Hi Jase

Think you might have a good point.

Its a common mod on the MK1 Octy vRS to fit 225 45 R17's to the 7"x17" spiders, in place of the expensive std 205 50 R17's that the cars came with new, and it seems to work well.

But maybe 225 35 R17 will be just to shallow a side wall to get away with it.

If I put 215/40/17's on Octy Spiders on my Fabia VRS, would it give any problems considering my fabia vrs is sitting on eibach springs (lower 25mm) I tried 225/45/R17 on 8j alloy wheels and the car was hating it, arch rubbing all over :S

Mine and Chris` cars, both on coilovers, both running 215/40`s. A little scrubbing on full lock, but normally ok.

Aah kool thanks for that. Any idea roughly how much youre is lowered although actually, it's definitely more than 25mm anyway.

I think I'll go for the 215/40/17's then, wider rubber base or more grip too. What tyres are you using and how do they hold?

Given the ridiculous ride hight as standard i`d say it could be as much as 100mm drop, but that would be guessing. Another one of my mates has a bog standard one, might take some rough measurements at the weekend and see.

Matt

lol my guess is 74.26mm

Think its 60mm approx, mine is all the way down on the rears and no scrubbing with 205/40/17's.

It can differ from tyre to tyre brand wise though as some have steeper side walls for stretching. Had some Hankooks and they looked awful, got Yokohama Parada Spec 2 on mine atm

I'm after 17" Octavia Spider's with Yoko Parada Spec 2's on actually lol.

lol want mine :)

what's the condition of them like? Ideally wanted them in gunmetal, are yours gloss black?

What kinda price would you sell for/how much tread on tyres lol. INFO INFO INFO!! :p

lol will have a think, not sure I want to sell them - will PM if I do and Tas has 1st dibs :D

Ok kool.yeah let me know
