Oil Advice

Featured Replies

Hi All

I am after some advice before I go shouting at my local dealers (which I probably will do anyway on Saturday!)

I have a 2010 Octavia vRS, I had its oil changed last year and the service booklet which I just have checked shows that the mechanic ticked the box "NO" on the use variable service oil section of the service book.

My bill however states that LLOIL 3 was used.

I dont what to believe the bill or the service booklet.

I have searched LLOIL 3 but no hits on google, obviously dealer short for Long Life Oil.

Any advice as would be helpful as I dont want to have the wrong oil messing up the DPF.

Probably just a mistake in the book, probably not the mechanic who stamped the book though, that's normally done by front of house.

Maybe probably.....

but what if it not and theres the wrong oil in the car?

My local dealer admitted to me that a lot of people don't realise DPF equipped diesels require long life oil regardless of if they are on fixed or variable servicing.

Even if you approach the dealer they aren't going to admit putting in the wrong oil. You'll just get "of course we used the right oil sir".

My car was serviced by the garage before i bought it but i didn't trust that they put the right oil in so the first thing i did was change it to quantum longlife 3. Was it a main dealer than serviced your car? If so i'd be confident that they used the right stuff. I've been told by a mechanic that they always use longlife oil now anyway, even on cars that aren't on a variable service. You may want to get that confirmed though.

If it wasn't long life oil , it would automatically need a change at 10,000 miles, the indicator reverts to that even if you have long life oil in and top up with normal mineral over a litre. so look at the mileage it was changed on, you can work it out .

Not with a DPF - it NEEDS the correct oil apparently..

Does your bill have a part number (probably starting "ZGB" - the ones for my car did, and they were the standard VW part codes for Quantum oil?). "LLOIL3" sounds like it might be Quantum LongLife 3 (just a guess) ...

quantum long life is ZGB 115 QLB 00501, and yes your correct anything with a DPF must use long life

I would not trust the main dealers to use the right oil. I had my first service done at the supplying dealership and they admitted to using some generic bulk long life oil they also use in the Mitsubishis and Hondas they also sell and service, and could not prove to me it was 507.00 spec which my car must have since it's got a DPF and is on variable servicing. Even the top up bottle they gave me was 505.00 and they said it is the same and would be fine! What made me suspicious was they only charged me £5 a litre for the bulk oil - decent 507.00 spec oil should have been a lot more than that! First thing I did after the service was buy the right oil and get it changed. Needless to say I will not be returning there for subsequent services.

Bob.

Are you willing to name and shame? I'm in Hampshire too and bought my VRS from a multi-franchise site.

That is shocking Bob. Maybe the thing to do is buy the oil ones self and ask them to use that. But even so there's still no guarantee that they'll use it.

1L of quantum Long life is only £5.80 inc vat, bargain if you ask me

For 507 spec?

the same oil your dealer puts in your car when it gets serviced, they use quantum 507 spec long life

I now use another dealership near where I work in Poole and last time I popped in I asked them what they would use in the workshop in my car at the next service and they said Mobil 1 so I'll be going there next.

But does mobil 1 meet the vw 507 spec?

Thanks Bob, that's not my supplying dealer but I think I'll be confirming what they use before the service to make sure its not a similar situation.

Yes it is - I bought a litre of ESP there for top up and its the same as they use in the workshop.

So they say..... emoticon-0100-smile.gif

When I bought my Octy (brand new) in 2008 I asked for a bottle of long life and paid £10 for 1L

When I picked the car up the WRONG OIL had been put on the passenger seat for me.

I didn't realise until I got home. I wrote to them (DM Keith Wakefield) with a copy of the receipt - They never responded and I couldn't be @rsed going back. The lawnmower runs fine on the 505 though!

Weeks later I went into DM Keith Leeds whilst I was in the area to buy some oil. I asked for the long life stuff. Out comes a bottle of 505. I asked the chap to check as I didn't think that it was long life. Minutes later he returned with a bottle of 507.

Its not exactly difficult. Full fat has a blue lid and semi has a green lid. If the muppets at ASDA can put the right milk on the right shelf why can't the dealers learn the difference between two oils.

It bad when the customers know more than the "technicians"

I did finally get this resolved.

The person at the desk had just, according to the service manager, ticked everything.

They confirm that it was long life 507 spec oil.

However not sure so have just bought some Castrol Edge 507 spec and am having local independant garage change oil just in case.

What the dealer doesnt know wont hurt the warranty, right.

I know of a large hampshire dealer that told a relative that the VW506.1 he had purchased was not correct for the PD140 and the he should use their alternative oil.

IIRC it wasn't long life.

Sure it's not the same as for a car with a DPF, as long as it met the correct VW 505.1 standard. It does however show that some people really don't have a clue.
