Speed-related rubbing noise

Featured Replies

Right firstly, hi everyone! Usual story here about reading the forum for a while, but staying quiet.. :hi:

On my last two journeys (only short runs in town) the octy has developed an alarming rubbing noise which gets harsher in relation to speed (faster = louder). Whether accelerating, braking, in gear, neutral/clutch pedal in, it doesn't seem to matter, just purely dependant on speed. At 30/40 mph, as i say it is a loud/harsh noise. I'm sure it's purely coincidence, but this has happened since i replaced the coolant temp sensor, and cleaned out the panel filter. Can't see how these can be related to the rubbing noise at all though....

I wondered if it was a wheel bearing (despite having new front bearings at around 15-20k previously) and jacked the car up to give the wheel a rock and all seems to be OK. :S

I have noticed a slight knocking noise from the N/S suspension in the past few months, which i think is the ARB bushes, and is another job on the to-do list. Could this be connected to the rubbing noise? Has anyone else developed this nasty rubbing noise purely from worn bushes on front suspension?!

The car is a '54 plate 130TDi Ambiente SE that's done just over 66k. Had it Revo'd in late september last year, after it's 60k cambelt/service mid summer. First problem I've had with it!

Wonder if anyone has any good ideas of what this could be? I'm at uni so don't have a decent jack/ axle stands/ any decent tools with me to have a proper look underneath!!

Cheers

Dan

plastic wheel arch trim dropped? Otherwise what are your cv boots looking like?

unlikely to be your pancake pipe as you would only catch that when cornering.

Wheel arch plastic is all in place, and CV boots are in good nick.

Is the pancake pipe the intake for the airbox? where does that dissapear to down the side of battery?!

Hiya Kickstart!! :D

If your car has dust shields on the front discs (some don't), this may be a stone trapped behind it.

Removing the wheel, and flexing the shield in might get rid if so, but in this event, there's a possibility of a scored disc, which will mean new front discs and pads I'm afraid. Don't buy the parts until you know the disc is scored; inspect the disc and make sure, if I was right about the stone.

It's rare that people pick up on the ogri reference!! ;)

It does have the disc shields, so this will definitely be worth a check. Hope to god the discs aren't scored if this is the case - put new discs and pads on in august!! Thanks for the idea!
