Setting up a Netgear DG834G help, please?

Featured Replies

Something's not right....

Firstly, I know the ADSL signal is getting through to my newly purchased DG834G, but it seems its not speaking to my ethernet card... #1 theory is my ethernet card is knackered, or well out of date. I bought it back in late 1999 when I went on cable broadband with NTL whilst at uni. Its a

Linksys LNE100TX fast ethernet adaptor (LNE100TX v4) (according to properties which says "the device is working properly")

I inserted the cable provided by Netgear from port 4 on the router, to the above ethernet card but got no little light come on, on my #4 on the router. :( So had to plug in the USB modem again. Anyone know if I may have a conflict that my router can't talk to my PC? Not sure where to go from here. :(

Try connecting it to port 1...

Jason you have PM

Is the cable they supplied a normal cat5 cable or is it a cat5 cross over cable? That could be your problem.

Also is your network card set to get ipaddress from a dhcp server?

Pretty sure the DG834G has auto-port sensing, so it should work regardless...can't remember off the top of my head tho'.

A few things to check - does the ethernet card have a light on the back of it and is it on? Try the cable in all the ports of the router. Also do you have a second Cat-5 cable you can try? It may require a cross-over cable, but I'd suspect that is what the cable supplied would be .... I think most of the switches these days are auto-sensing....

Just plugging the cable in should show a light on both the ethernet card and router, even if you haven't configured it so I'd be looking at a fault with either the cable or the port on the router :D

The router is powered on, isn't it? ;)

 Router is on... yeah - ADSL light was solid on too. Ports are auto sensing, BUT there is NO light on the back of the PC on ethernet card... (has one there labelled "100" - all seems dead, but maybe they only light up when active?

Dave - I await your advice. ;)

Sounds like the ethernet card is knackered then as it should flash even with no cable in, at least all mine do :) I wonder if you can test the cable by plugging each end of the cable into ports on it?

Chris

I'd imagine that the cable they've sent you is a cross over cable which should be plugged into you adsl and then into the uplink port or wan port on your router.

The lights on your network card should turn on with just connecting the cable, it will even stay on when the pc is turned off.

is the network card seated properly?

Can you actually see the network card within Windows? If not, could try reseating the network card.

Do any of the people with laptops not have onboard network ports which you could try to see if it's the card?

Cable with DG834 should be a standard straight through....regardless the router is auto sensing.

No lights come on the pc lan adapter at all? Normal green if all ok and orange is not.

I assume you have the card enabled? If not use the device manager.

Also you said you got it for when you went on cable with NTL.....I know you'd need a different type of modem for cable perhaps this is true of ethernet card.

My guess is the pc card is cream crackered.

Nah, ethernet card is standard - once it's past the modem it should all be the same...

For the sake of a couple of quid, you could try a new patch cable twixt router and PC first, then a new ethernet card (less than a tenner from ebuyer). However, the cable that came with my DG834G worked fine straight into my PC - it's a normal patch cable, not a crossover. The switch in the DG834G I believe is 10/100 too, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Jason, have you configured Networking correctly on your PC? If you've been using dialup you'll need to change a fair amount of stuff to get it working with the ethernet card.

Control Panel -> Network connections

Is there a Local Area Connection? is it enabled?

Forgot to add:

My DG834 only lights up the ports indicators (1,2,3,4 etc) when above is enabled.
