THE TOP GEAR MAG VRS REVIEW

Featured Replies

"Rated for lifetime"of what ,no way will you be able to get this gearbox to last a lifetime nobody knows really how long they may last, double clutch system I think with this gearbox if this breaks it will cost loads to fix, with some of you VRS drivers saying its difficult to get to grips with it you may be putting it under a lot of strain, its an engine with not only a turbo a supercharger also a hell of a lot of loading going through the front wheels, clutch problems you well may have expensive it will be,this system was not mated to the VRS its simple the VAG group never had a manual for it.if they had a manual 6 or 7 speed box you would be driemoticon-0103-cool.gifving.

Apparently you can the DSG will lag and tell you when its ready to go,if you drive it hard on anything other than dry asphalt it will not give you what you want,i.e the gear you picked for it ,this is very much the downfall of the VRS nail on head computer controlled,a supercar she aint no no no in a Fabia yes in the octi and superb

You don’t know what your talking about. Little tip for you. Base your information on FACT not hearsay.

FACT - DSG does what you tell it when you tell it weather is snow, or shine. The only time it won’t is if the command will put the rev's too HIGH or too LOW resulting in damage or stall.

I didn't know you knew all the inside info from VAG. Do you really think they would have allowed the 7-speed DSG to go in all these high performance car's just because they didn't have a manual to chuck in.. Get real! If they needed one they'd have developed one. The 1.4TSI/DSG combo is there to get good emissions MPG and power. It succeeds in this task.

45mpg+ - Check

Low tax and Emissions - Check

Unreasonably Quick - Check

Scares older people because its new tech - Check :o

Indeed, especially as a lot of the parts from the DSG 'box could be used but with a simpler clutch assembly. DSG is fitted to performance vehicles because it gives a significantly faster gear-change (thus reducing published performance figures) without the transmission losses associated with a traditional automatic transmission.

The 7-speed DSG's clutches are similar in design to the 5speed manual (Says INA Engineering who are currently has one in bits to develop uprated clutch components).

45mpg+ - Check

I don't think this one has been checked. It is not what I see reported on this forum by a long shot.

Yeah, 45 is optimistic, but I reckon possible.

I managed 42mpg on a *very* gentle hour-long motorway run.

I guess on a longer run with no traffic you could get 45, but it's not really a realistic figure.

emoticon-0148-yes.gif if your driving VRS your not doing it for the MPG, your driving it for the buzz of it,to be honest I had a test drive today and I left it in auto and yes its a cracker far to firm for me though goes round corners like my old seat altea sport used to,on rails really good but there are so many potholes in the roads now its feels like someone hammering your spleen out,for ye young one's its a cracker enjoy but still out on the DSG I was to scarred to switch it on emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Hi guys, sorry to change the topic of convo again but having already aired my dislike of TG thought i'd have another go  Made a point of watching it the other nite and my original point still stands. It's not a proper car show, it was entertaining for the first couple of series but it is now just old hat tosh. The only thing I found mildly enjoyable was the XJ220 powered Transit and that section lasted all of a couple of minutes. I ended up turning it off after the rather boring Ferrari 599 GTO review.

I wouldnt mind if the BBC axed the show.....as well as ousting some of their greedy execs who are earning £4-500K/year +. Government could save some useful money if they reigned in the BBC's activites a little bit I reckon!

I'd be inclined to agree that the ride quality on the vRS is not as good as I expected it to be. A hell of a lot firmer than my Golf (that also has sports suspension). Still buying one though!

So are you calling me a liar now??

Have a look on my youtube account 53MPG on the way back from work @55MPH..

I get 45MPG EVERY DAY when I drive in at 50/60MPH. I don’t boot it on the way to work in busy traffic because I’m not an F'in loon!

People that say they can’t get 45mpg need to learn how to drive economically. It’s really not difficult.

I'll save my blasts for quiet night-time and weekend runs.

I've had my car for 21k miles. I know infinity more about the engine box and mods than you do Sir.

BTW Revo and Vpower is used.

I bought the car because it has the best of both worlds. On todays roads driving for the buzz every time is not possible or financially feasible. If it was i’d have an Evo or Rocco R.

Scared to switch it on?? You don’t switch it on, it does its thing the second you turn the key. What do you really think it could do to you?

As I said before it isn't meant to be a proper car show, it is a light hearted Sunday evening entertainment show. nothing more, nothing less....

Also as i said, Top Gear makes the BBC money with merchandise and selling the show to other channels and countries.

If you don't like it don't watch it, there are 6.48 million others that will!

I don't like Holby City or Match of The Day but i'm not asking for that to be axed!

In theory and from unrealistic EU tests, the Fabia II vRS has low emissions and high mpg; 45+.

Now this is good for the UK owners in one respect that it keeps the road tax low.

However, the car in practice has high emissions due to the low mpg that it actually achieves; 30+ mpg.

If the tests were Skoda's own, they could probably be sued for misrepresentation.

This spoils the enjoyment of an otherwise terrific car.

Tony :(

TopGear is fun trash TV that is all. I quite enjoy Fifth Gear as well TBH.

The car is like Jackel and Hyde..

Drive the car with very light throttle, interpret the road ahead to limit breaking and take advantage of declines etc and the car will happily get 45+ if you keep her at or under 60MPH.

With a Revo the car can beat new shape focus RS's and Porches on the quarter mile and overtake Caterhams on track (However this is with coilover suspension).

These are proven FACTS by more than one person with video or timing evidence to back them up.

How many car's do you know that can match this with a stage 1 and some suspension mods (I'm putting the Ibiza, Polo, A1 and Fabia in the same boat here).

EDIT.. Im also 26 and dont give a flying Duck about emmissions as long as I get cheap tax.

Wanna cut C02.. go kill some Cow's! They kick out more crap than cars.

Mardon, I like your style; I too don't pay too much attention to emissions.

However, a dog has a higher carbon footprint than a sizable 4x4 and we eat cows, not dogs.

So I shall ask the Prime Minister to re-introduce the dog licence fee and reduce fuel tax.

Wish me luck.

Tony

Barclay's bank and Barclaycard are two separate entities, so is TG Mag and the Tv show, the one who reviewed the Estate is on neither, he just does the online stuff. Tom Ford is the reviewer for the Mag . Again some people haven't read the article , just listening to hearsay .

Although the maxidot is not a true representation, I averaged 45.4mpg on my drive in this morning over 30 miles. I usually get 400 miles out of a tank as well (so roughly 41mpg using full tank brim method).

Think I drive like you Mardon, keep it between 50MPH and 60MPH, look at the road ahead, coast whenever you can and you'll easily get 45MPG on the maxidot.

i think people need to ignore the trip computers mpg average, and instead consider what they get to a full tank. Or what you will get to a 1/4. However if your going to work that out it cant be measured from full to 3/4s full as that would take into account the pipework to the filler cap which is a fair few litres.

The best way to measure you 1/4 tank distance is to set you re-set your trip (mileage) when you are on 3/4 of a tank and see how many mile you get to half a tank. then multiply by 4 obviously.

So what are you guys getting?

280 Gti Inters Full Not brimmed 45lts

320 Blast Driving Brimmed 55lts

420 Mixed Driving Brimmed 55lts

500 Careful Driving Brimmed 55lts

Wow - that's nice to hear. I guess it takes a while for the engine to loosen up before those sorts of MPGs are possible.

Yeah that will be over 5k miles. I'm on 20k and its still spot on.

Very very tight engines at first. They loosen up nicely.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a look at top gear review magazine and they gave the VRS 4 out of 5 stars. Talk about being inconsistent!

This months evo magazine pits the Polo GTI against the Clio 200, DS3R, Mini Cooper S JCW and Corsa VXR.

Same engine/chassis as the polo so should be similar in performance as well

Its the least powerful by between 11-30Hp yet it still stayed close enough to them. and up until 90 only the mini and DS3R get ahead of it. so they should with a 30hp advantage

they say that it will do those times consistently all day long. Whereas with the others being manual its more than likely that you wont be able to pull it off everytime.

they also Pitted the fabia vRS against a Lancia intergrale on a damp track, so considering the AWD, power and torque advantage it didnt do bad at all.

Not sure how the 1.39 lap time compares to other hot hatches? but they gave it a really good write up, and they must like ti to consider putting it up against such an iconic car
