Swirls in the paint + other questions

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've just spent ages trying to get swirls out of the paintwork on my car and I don't seem to be having a awful lot of luck.

I've done one of the rear pillars which had some very lights swirling and most of it has come out. But next I thought I'd try the boot and whilst now it feels a lot smoother than it did (feels like glass now) when I started the swirls and scratches are still there and can't seem to get them out.

I'm using this stuff http://www.pakshak.com/presta-chroma-swirl-remover-32oz.html with a machine polisher on a low speed.

Should I try using a faster speed? Applying a bit more pressure? I'm worried about damaging the paint.

Also what should I use to clean the chrome about the window frame and the mirror covers?

The valeter isn't here to ask and now I've started I want to finish!

Thanks for any advice.

Wot sort of machine polisher have you got, and what pads? I would use glass cleaner on the "chrome".

I use 1 speed down from fastest on my DAS-6 polisher. There is no cutting power in slow speed. Don't be too afraid to use faster speeds - VAG paint is really tough and you will have to go seriously OTT to start burning through the paint.

As above, what polisher and pad are you using?

Skoda Paint is a middle of the road hardness paint, the polish you have posted is to light IMO also you havent said what pad you are using.

If it was me i would be using a polishing pad and maybe 3M Extra Fine cut. working at speed two for a few passes then up to speed 4 to work it in then onto speed 6 until the polish goes clear and like an oil.

Thanks for the replies guys. To be honest I don't know what pad or polisher it is, I shall go and have a look. I didn't realise this was important! The pad is very soft and spongelike if this helps..

I tried using a higher speed and it did seem to make a difference. Have a nice shiny finish but still some marks there, I have attached some photos but they don't really show up.

I will try the glass cleaner for the silvery chrome bits. Thanks!

It think that your comment on realising how important things are may be the key to your problems..............

Presta polishes are very good but if you have the Swril Remover product then I think you will find this is more of a filler than providing any cuttng action so you will struggle to remove swirls. This will also be the case if your using a polishing / finishing pad which I believe you may be suggesting if the pad is very soft.................... :|

I see that your trying to correct and Audi S8 and speaking from experience the paintwork on these are a lot tougher than your average VAG motor so this will be why your struggling, to really make and impact you need a rotary, cutting polishes and pads with a follow up of some finishing polished and pads...............

Thank you Baker21. I have been looking at that Detailingworld forum and I think I have a lot to learn....

I managed to get the car very clean and presentable but on close inspection it still have swirly marks and small scratches in the paintwork the bonnet seems okay but the roof and the sides are terrible. I imagine it has been through a lot of car washes and they have ruined the paint somewhat.

But happy with the outcome from cleaning, polishing so far. Once I am back from my trip I will have a go at correcting the paint with the correct tools. I imagine I will have some questions to ask then!

It's a mind field but it can be done given time.............

Haha, the colour is very 'marmite' some people like it whilst some people find it awful.

I quite like it, but buying used you can't really be too fussy!

Is it your own motor then?

Thanks guys, it is mine!

I fancied one for ages, well ever since I saw Ronin....

I'm going down to the Alps in it next week which should be fun!

It isn't great on fuel.... Seems to be averaging 22mpg but I was in a rush for work this morning and it got 14mpg which was pretty sad.

It isn't as fast as you might think, a remapped TSi vRS would keep up with it in a straight line up to 100mph and totally obliterate it on a track and I'm convinced a 3.6 Superb would be faster than it.

I might have to take it up to you Baker21 when I get back. Rob (Octygone) said he took his Octavia up to you and you did an amazing job, I'll drop you a PM when I get back and maybe we could sort something out?
