Just bought an Octavia

Featured Replies

My dad just bought so I have few questions about the car.

1. Seems that rear window heating is always on. Button works normally, but the "on" light is always on. Whats the problem?

2. What kind of oil should I choose (AGN engine)? Semi-synthetic or synthetic? Previous owner used semi synthetic and before him car was oiled with synthetic oil.

3. Car has an Blaupunkt system. Radio sounds terrible. CD doesn't work, but thats not a problem. Could be this is an common fault? Antenna?

4. The clutch is slipping pretty badly. Car has only 143k km on dash (which is real, because car has full service history). Thats means clutch plate has to be changed? Dad's Skoda was brought here from Germany (as almost all used cars in Latvia). and there it was driven by an very old man. Blame on him?

Thats all for now. Thank you.

Hi.

1. Sounds like the switch is faulty, or sticking - try dismantling it and cleaning it.

2. You should be using 5w40 fully syntetic, oils needs to have the VW502.00 or VW504.00 approvals. The oil pickup is known to block with semi synthetic oil.

3. The aerial has an amplifier built into the base - The standard headunit sends power to it, but most aftermarket ones don't. You need an aerial power supply.

4. Sounds like the clutch friction plate - Maybe the old man used to ride the clutch a lot?

You need an aerial power supply something like this:

1. Ok. I will try to clean it.

2. Castrol and Comma catalog says that its also possible to use semi-synt oil. But yeah, maybe for a 5v engine its better to go off with fully synthetic. I found Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 oil, 5 liters for about 24 pounds. Thats quite cheap. And that oil has to be approved by VW group.

But the thing is, This car had three previous owners. I don't know what kind of oil was used in Germany (service book just says that its been changed). And two in owners Latvia before my dad. First owner in was a woman, and then the car was oiled with an synt oil. And the last owner oiled it with semi. I'm just thinking- if I start to use synt oil again, could it can damage engine? Or no?

3. I have heard about this problem, thanks.

4. Riding with a clutch is pretty common problem on old people. But how hard its been used. Only 143k kilometers. Our family second car is an '98 Corolla which has 161k km. of 90% city driving and the clutch is still fine.

This is an very early Octavia, so maybe Skoda had some quality problems? Ow, but its an Audi engine. Ok, never mind, it will be fixed.

A really big thank you for all this information. What an great forum!
