uneven rear tyre wear

Well the tyres are now off and have been sent back to goodyear, according to my records the tyres have only done 2800 miles ish, I have had 8 pairs of these tyres that have been rotated front to rear and never had this issue before, shocks and springs are good, just cant think of why it would do it, now fitted some khumo things, they had good write ups so will have to see how it goes.

I fitted a new rear near side tyre some time last year following a puncture, can't remember exactly when, but it was well after I had my fronts changed. The other day I noticed that the outer quarter is almost down to the wear bar, similar to the level of wear on the fronts. I had a 4 wheel alignment done last year too. So apart from obvious alignment issues, might this indicate bushes or wear somewhere else?

Given that I cover about 22k per year, I reckon this rear tyre has done about 12k compared to about 28k for the fronts.

Had similar issue with my Fabia VRS.

Turned out to be extreme low tyre pressures allowing extreme wear on both outer and inner parts of rear & front tyres.

Told by helpful tyre fellow extreme cold turns air inside tyre to ice when starts to melt leaks through pores of the rubber tyre and causes slow deflation.

If not re-inflated tyre will slowly flatten over a period.

One tyre was down to 15psi pressure because not checked for 3 months.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Had similar issue with my Fabia VRS.

Turned out to be extreme low tyre pressures allowing extreme wear on both outer and inner parts of rear & front tyres.

Told by helpful tyre fellow extreme cold turns air inside tyre to ice when starts to melt leaks through pores of the rubber tyre and causes slow deflation.

If not re-inflated tyre will slowly flatten over a period.

I know what you mean but it's not that. For a start I check my pressures too regularly for that to happen, and also the wear is on the outside edge only, not the inner edge.

I'm planning to replace rear beam bushes and shocks during the summer, and will replace both rear tyres after that.

That is my plan too. I did the shocks and that did not cure the problem, so the bushes are next on the list. I just have to decided which ones to fit.

I know what you mean. I'd been leaning towards the oem parts but after this weekend my tolerance for parts that don't fit easily is at an all time low, so may go with Superpro after all. As much as it pains me to spend £90 on bushes! :o

The fabia vRS ones aren't that expensive, so I might go with them... guess they will be equally painful to fit as the standard ones.... I just have to hope that my local dealer can actually get them in - last time I ordered some they never turned up.

Either that I or need to find out the best way of getting a discount at TPS and ordering over the counter. :thumbup:

I agree with dannyboy but one other main possibility for excessive tyre wear on one side is brake drag.

Ok, it's been a while since I last did any chemistry, but I'd really like to meet this fellow. He sounds like the sort of natural bull-$hitter that no amount of training could ever hope to reproduce!

Air at room temp is about 1% water vapour. Condense or freeze that and you lose 0.01% by volume of the air in the tyre. To lose more than that by "water leaking through the pores" you'll need to convert some of the oxygen or nitrogen (or maybe carbon) into hydrogen. Ok, you might do this by atomic decay if they weren't "stable" atoms, but only with the release of 6 to 8 Alpha particles, and a similar number of quanta of hard ionising radiation!

The issue is that one side of the tyres is wearing. It seems to be the outside edge of both rear tyres. Can't see this being brake drag tbh?

Is anyone else experiencing this or found a cure?

I thought it was because my car was previously used as a tow car, but that has been disregarded

One thing I have found is the car is "skitish" at the rear when driving over uneven roads, so much that the car jumps when say going over potholed or raised parts of the road

Are we talking axles bushes here?

I have replaced a original set of Bridgestone Potenza's with another set; I know some brands are supposed to be quite bad

I think the droning noise is there but I tend to block it out as I drive on the motorway 200 miles a day; I just turn up the music!

seems likely that rear axle/beam bushes are the culprit. I'm procrastinating over mine cos its a choice between cheap bushes which are a pig to fit, or expensive ones which are easy to fit!

The thing is there's nothing that your usual tracking place can adjust for the rear. However there are specialists who can realign the rear.

Something like a bent rear beam (often caused by someone jacking up on the rear beam) will also cause this.

Since I changed my rear bushes (for the fabia vrs ones) and fitted some more Falkens (had wear on the previous ones) the problem has not re-appeared yet - or least not that I have noticed anyway, so I am hoping the new bushes were the cure.

However that said the old bushes did not seem that bad (before I butchered the living daylights out of them taking them out).

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger (and if your dead who cares if the rear tyre wear is bad! :giggle: ) Actually that might explain why they won't let me do things at work and I am stuck to a desk.... :giggle:
