Octavia 1.6TDI CR

Featured Replies

HI All,

Am new here but would like to know a little bit more about the 1.6 TDI CR.

1) First of all Skoda claims that this will do around 62 MPG or so. Is this correct?

2) How does this Octavia compare to 1.4 petrol that previously existed? (performance wise)

3) What are some of the standard features and what are extras on this model? For instance is the MDI connection a standard or has it to be ordered additionally?

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

I don't think so. My parents have this engine in Audi A3 application, after 5k miles they're getting mid-50s.

But then show me any car that hits it's published figures.

I have this engine with the DSG gearbox.

Yes mostly mid fifties, sometimes high fifties.

I have however on an occassional longer run managed the low sixties. Two or three times.

This only from the trip computer read out...which I understand is probably reading a wee? bit optimistic.

However the key appears to be in getting the engine warm, takes at a guess about 10 or 15 miles.

Plus the usual winter penalty in eccess fuel consumption, over summer figs.

Cheers

I did note somewhere the suggestion that one should average the

(i)Urban =50.4

(ii)Extra Urban=67.3

and

(iii)Combined figs=60.1

to give a more realistic figure?

However simply taking an average of the first two figures without any weighting as per the official calculation gives 58.85mpg, which I would not/could not argue with as since we only have 4000 miles on the clock and most of my work is short cold urban runs, with an occasional (50 mile) longer weekend run

I have the 1.6 TDI CR since July of 2010.

It now just over 13k and doing average 6.0L/100km.

Do 50/50 town and open road. Never once the filter light should up.

Very smooth engine, to bad it only has a 5 speed gear box, 3750rpm = 197 km/h.

Last weekend went to the visit the highest point in Portugal, 2000m above sea level.

Was suprised how it took the road with 2 adults and 2 kids and some bags.

Yes does not have the kick that the 1.9 tdi had and yes sometimes lacks power expecially when loaded.

Even though excellent highway car, put in 5 and just drive.

Why did I buy the 1.6 instead of the 2.0.

The dif. between the 2 is 5000€ because of goverment taxes.

Then had the low emissions on trade in for another car, 1250€.

The 1.6 pays 125€ road tax/year, the 2.0 over 200€.

If I could afford the 2.0, yes I would have bought it.

Waiting to have it given more power someday.( had it done on my other car the 1.9dci 100cv, now has about 120cv and what a dif., over 100000km since tuned)

sorry, triple post :giggle:

I think this engine seems much better when paired up with the 7 speed dsg, we have two 1.6tdi's at work, these seem much slower than the 1.9tdi's that they replaced, i have the 2.0tdi pd unit, and its a much stronger performer and im getting 47-52mpg, that said i carry my work things in and ladders and beacon on the top, so not bad really. when my car gets replaced i will be having a vrs tdi cr with dsg next.

Yes I would agree regarding the marriage of the DSG with the 1.6TDI.

I was a trifle apprehensive as there appeared to be a "bad word" out on the 1.6TDI, as being hesitent/sluggish etc, this prior to our decision to purchase, but as far as I recall all manual gearbox based.

I have however found if pootling along at say 50 ish in 7th (& 7th selected from 40mph ish), plant the foot...drops instantly to 4th fills the clock & away & repeats as necessary , so for overtaking it really does work, for me leastwise.

i find powerwise the engine is fine and no way i would ever want a 1.9 PD back, this is so smooth, i get 55 to 60 mpg, car now done 6k.

My wife has the 1.6 tdi in her Ibiza, its done about 5k now and ive seen 67mpg on the trip.

IMO, this is not a sluggish engine at all, very smooth and plenty powerful enough for a small car.

I've only tried it in an Audi A3 courtesy car but I thought it was a truly brilliant engine, silent, smooth and plenty quick enough. I've driven umpteen vw and audi diesels over the last 7 years recently the 140 bhp diesel CR in an A4 for a few years, I found the A3 1.6 CR diesel 5 speed I tried was only marginally slower than the A4 with a 2.0. Those CR's are a big step forward in refinement and have a more linear power delivery than the older diesels.

The 1.4TSI 122bhp petrol is also supposed to be a really great engine.

Personally a massive thumbs up for it from me.

I would be more worried as to if the engines can get to 250,000 to 300,000 miles even more in some cases like the 1.9 can without any major problems

I have found an odd side effect of the longivity of the 1.9 lump....... with 230,00 on the old girl my sump plug threads are now knackered, it (the sump plug!) having been in & out so often ( and perhaps a tad over torqued bytimes)

Dem dammned Germanan engineers apparently overlooked this aspect of their otherwise indestructible design.(but see below)

************************

I will however reserve judgement on the expected longivity of the 1.6 TDI

Mind you with oil changes at 18,500 its only 11 oil changes to 230,000 miles so the sump plug threads should still be OK....... ;)

So there is the real reason for extended oil change intervals.......poor sump plug threads.

I have had reservations regarding the 1.6 cr tdi due to some people saying you have to drive it more like a petrol engine and rev it a bit more and that it's sluggish etc.... Today I tested the 1.6 cr tdi in the Octavia combi and I was mightly impressed on the performance of this engine. It's smoother and the overall performance appeared equal to the 1.9pd, and at 70mph the revs are about 3 - 400 less than the pd. Difficult to comment on the economy on a short test drive, but £30 road fund is a bonus.

.......and, oh yes I bought it

Depends what drive train you match it to.

In a 4x4 the 1.6TDI CR is definately sluggish; however with only 500 on the clock I'm still being gentle with it. In my last motor, (1.9 TDI PD 100bhp Passat estate), I went for gaps in traffic at junctions and roundabouts that would be suicidal for me to attempt in the Octavia 4x4, but then again it wasn't purchased for the sake of speed - you'll want a vRS for that.

On my journeys to work (100 mile round trip) I can squeeze Ø50mpg (according to Maxidot) out of it - but that's in 6th doing 60mph/1950rpm on motorways, with some gentle urban sections thrown in at either end.

Nice, quiet engines, but don't expect to speed the Earth's rotation by pointing the car due west and then flooring it...

One last thing, 1st gear is not something you'll spend a whole lotta time in. A bit like going into a Rangers pub wearing a Celtic top - you'll be out of it quicker than you went in... (Self confessed Killie supporter, BTW)

I test drove a manual 1.6 tdi cr last week just to get a shot in an octy estate (intending to buy a petrol model), and liked it overall.

It pulls strongly around town and has a nice subdued diesel rumble that I really enjoyed. Gives the impression that it will just munch the motorway miles...effortless cruising at about 2500 rpm/80 mph.

The only negative point was that I was surprised to find the pedal pressed to the floor when getting to speed in 5th on a long steep uphill sliproad joining a motorway. I drove a petrol 1.8 FTSI Audi A4 up the same road the day before and it was effortless in 6th. Possibly I don't know how to drive these diesels, and should have dropped a gear, although it told me to be in 5th ;-).

If I did the miles I would defo consider the 1.6 tdi...although I would probably want to test one loaded up just to make sure.

We can´t expect alot from the engine it´s only 1.6 not 2.0, the main dif. between the 1.9(105hp) and the 1.6 is that below 1400rpm nothing happens but on the other hand the engine noise is way less.( still love the 110hp.)

Either way I think is can be resumed to one word " Downsizing"

With ever increasing fuel prices and the tax system penalising high emission cars this type of discussion will only increase in momentum.

I currently have a 1.6 TDI CR SE Hatch on order and am expecting to get over 70mpg out of it, I may start a thread once it is finally delivered posting my findings. My rationale being that I currently have a 1.6HDI 90 Peugeot 308 with a margianlly higher CO2 figure of 120g per KM and regularly get 70-80 average out of it. I also have a 3 series coupe E92 2.0 Diesel which I regularly get about 60mpg out of.

Your fuel consumption although firstly boils down to the car you have, will vary massively dependant on the driver and journey. Short journeys on cold engines will have an effect as well as the time of year as if the ambient temp is very low it will take a lot longer for your engine to fully warm up to the point where it is most efficient.

My journey to work is a 24mile straight single carriageway A road which I drive at a constant speed!

So heres some tips, build up to speed as quickly but smoothly a possible and stay there. Get out of first as quick as possible, drive smoothly though, in a diesel try to change up gear before 2000rpm, try skipping 3rd gear and going straight into 4th. Anticipate your next move, don't race up to a red light or roundabout then slam on the brakes, ease off the throttle as you aproach it. Diesels are torquey so it is possible to potter about at just about anything above 30MPH in fifth gear.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just done my first MPG calculation for a long while and last week I got 49mpg from my 1.6TDi Octy for mostly short city runs. Think thats probably OK since I seem to spend my life shuffling up to or away from roundabouts. Done 8k since April last year but can't get myself used to the idea of it not needing a service yet. My old 405 needed one every 3k when I was doing mostly city work, but I appreciate that the new generations of diesel engine are different animals. But can someone reassure me please! :)
