Do these look like dodgy dry circuit board joints

Featured Replies

It looks that bad I don't think re-soldering would do any good, I have also noticed some other joints with slight cracks around the edges.

I am taking the board into the TV shop tomorrow to see what they say.

If it looks that bad, resoldering probably *will* fix it. As others have said, modern solder is more prone to bad joints. I used to work with an old-school TV engineer, and he taught me that you can fix an awful lot of TV and monitor problems with no more than a soldering iron, desolder gun, and a bit of time, and that's worked for me countless times. More relevant to CRT TVs, but looking at that board, it screams out loud.

You will have to post pics of the Telly's innards when it's returned :)

IMHO those joints look like the board has been in use for some years and the solder has crystallised , or the solder coming away from the component ,and the legs oxidising .Had this on all the rectifier diodes on an old monitor -simple application of resin cored solder and heat cured problem .Trouble is that in a lot of cases these areas are prone to get a bit hotter than other bits and (IMHO) could do with hotter solder to stop this .That said -my monitor was ancient when it happened .

Wonder if this is a side effect of that wonderful lead free solder .

Fortunately I've got a supply of 60/40 and a jar of flux .

Just use it as an excuse to get a telly upgrade.

There isnt much to upgrade from that tv short of 3D

You never know...when the engineer came to take it he mentioned if it costs them too much they may write it off and either give me a cheque less depreciation of the length of time I have had it or maybe replace the set with an equivalent model. The engineers said that first they will just swap and change boards around and take it from there. The TV has a diagnostic socket on the back but because of it not powering up now they cant get info from that.

It is a good TV and hope it can be fixed as I remember when I bought it going through different models and looking up specifications, The TV I have is what they call the Philips Ambilight 7 series now they are on the 9 series.

We had two brand-new Hitachi plasmas written off due to having dead cells - bit more costly than a circuit board I guess, but then you've got to factor in the cost of getting the right part sent over from the factory, etc. etc. In fact, we once had the wrong hoover part delivered and the manufacturer said not to bother sending it back!

Having said all that, I wouldn't put it past Currys to just have re-boxed the plasmas and put them back on sale hoping the next customer wouldn't notice (it was a green cell both times, so only visible when watching football, really...)

If the TV gets repaired will it be covered for 12 months again in the unlikey event to went faulty?

If you can prove it you can shaft them royaly as they are breaking the law!

But its not unheard of for new tvs to have dead pixels. more commonly is a line that goes when they are new.

Working at comet we had a few new models come in take them out the box, put them on the shelf, plug them in.......... 'well that needs a clearance ticket' :giggle:

thin black line down the screen
