Bangers

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm seeking some advice/recommendations with regard to buying a second car.I'm hoping to use it to drive my 50 mile round trip to work 5 days a week and also act as a general workhorse for myself and SWMBO. Trying to cut down the mileage on the vRS so I can keep it for a long time.

Any thoughts on what I could get for 500-1000 GBP that would be 'up to the job' and not cost the earth to run/insure (me:25, 1 years no claims, SWMBO:28 no NCB, parked on drive). Not really interested in 'badge snobbery' (how could I be! lol) so I don't really care what make/model or condition of bodywork is etc as long as it does the job.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Cheers

Hugh

at the risk of making generalisations hugh............................

anything japanese with an MOT :)

I have done just that, bought an old banger to drive to work though for a different reason.

I got myself a Ford Mondeo Ghia, see sig for

check out nissan micra's - they seem indestructable...

and really cheap...

or for an absolute bargain look at vectras.. they are ****e but you would rather crash one than a micra..... and so so cheap

Check this out for good bangers - maybe a little too knackered though.

I think that going for an ex rep mobile is always good - normally a semi-decent car for not a lot of money (like Manny did with his Ford mundano) :D

Devon,

Thanks for the link, might have a bit of trouble trying to convince SWMBO though!!

Rover 216 16V J - M reg.. dirt cheap....

Hugh,

Maybe have a look for a Mk3 Astra. I bought a 1992 J plate 1.7D GLS for

How about a Felicia 1.3? :)

An R Reg Felicia 1.3 in Rally Red (facelift with the new grille) on offer at my dealers for a tadge over 1500 quid. Should be able to find one for a grand or less , older with more miles on her...or what about a Favorit?

I would go for the Felicia. There are plenty about with decent mileage and ages for your cash. I wouldn't touch the Astra's because they are very easy to nick and aren't safest cars in the world. On Auto Trader they have ones for 1996 and 97 hatch and estate models for about a grand with around 50k on the clock. Apart from that if more space is needed there are a few Volvo 440's and Rover 600's which are cheap and reliable and in the case of the Volvo safe
