Yet Another Water Ingress Thread

Featured Replies

Good evening chaps. Long time no post - largely because my Superb ownership has been going along swimmingly! But alas, I am now swimming in my Superb.

I have of course read of the notorious and commonplace problems this car has with water ingress. Indeed, some of you were kind enough to advise that I (upon purchase) take steps to preclude this niggle. In my idiocy and my busyness I passed up.

What's done is done however. So I'll cut to the chase. Obviously, we incurred a frightful winter (particularly here in Glasgow) which we're now being washed out of by torrential February rains. My car held up just fine through the snow, sleet and generally Arctic conditions. Better than that actually, the ASR proved useful in the snow and the engine never refused a start once. Very hardy and so on...

The aforementioned washout of late though. It has put a very literal dampener on my spirits. I'd known a condensation problem through the winter... (precisely the same as described in the other thread on this board; wiping a suspended puddle from the windscreen and windows every morning. The inside of them that is. Or in the case of a freeze, scraping the interior glass too. Terrible nuisance. I wrote it off as just being the abnormally harsh winter. Foolishly, and lazily. I suppose.

Just yesterday, whilst driving home from work. I noticed a pool of water in my car. It lay (and still lays, ever refilling) in the rear foot-well, behind the drivers seat. It's severe, for sure. And it seems to be seeping in from somewhere in the sort of.... Mound which goes along the centre of the vehicle; with the armrest, handbrake, gearstick and so forth on it. Not at the front though; I can press a bit of the carpeting near a sort of plastic trim under the seat and water will spill in (and spill in...) not just soak in, almost pour. You know?

My electrics haven't been affected as of yet. They're fully operable and so on. There might just be a tiny bit of ingress in the drivers side as well. But it is vastly less so than in the rear. The passengers side doesn't appear to have any at the moment but I'm aware that I can only gage by the feel of the fabrics. Not necessarily revealing all.

I just wanted to put this to you all. I will follow the instructions on the pinned ingress thread and so on. See if that sorts it... If indeed that is what it is. Seems so? And would you have any tips on how I could dry it all up after stopping the inward ingress?

(NB; Potential consequences of not changing a noisy (on its way out) CV joint, anyone? And I still haven't sorted my erratic engine idling, I don't know if it's worth the investigative work, to be honest. Ain't always there, and doesn't seem to be to the car's detriment).

Cheers gents.

Paul.

As its the drivers side rear footwell I would check the bonnet release cable grommit is correctly in place first. It is simple and quick check and easy to put right straight away. Then move on to checking the battery area and pollen filter.

You can get rid of the water pooling in the rear footwells by removing the rubber floor plug in the rear footwell.

But you need to stop the water getting in before it does any damage.

On my Superb the carpet underlay is really thick meaning it holds an awful lot of water out of sight!

And if the vehicle has a sunroof, ensure that the sunroof channel drains are free running or water could be getting in there too. Luckily, I do not have a sun roof.

Hi Paul,

I just went out this afternoon just to test the glow plugs in my 2.5 TDI but discovered water exactly as you've described. No obvious damage and the passenger side dry. However, the footwell behind the driver seat had 3" of water! Using an Aquavac, I removed over 2 gallons! I also found about 2" under the battery and vacced that out. It wasn't as high as the pollen filter so not sure that's the route. In fact, the filter seal mod was done a few years ago and this is the first hint of moisture inside since. I think I've dried everything out now, but will monitor daily.

Good luck and fingers crossed!

Richard.

Did you remove the two bungs under the battery tray/brake servo when the mod was done. If so I cant see why water would collect there?

+1 this IMO is the most important part, the pollen filter should not leak if the seal has not been sat in water - If the grommets are not present then this is not possible, once the seal has been thoroughly soaked however it will always leak.

Hi All. Had a similar thing with my 2002 Supeb, water in rear footwell (driver's side). It was collecting in the battery bay under the bonnet and was about three inches deep. Removed the battery and the battery bay, cleaned all the rubbish from the drain hole and the water has come out. I thought, it was the end of the problem but now very confused, as the water is still flowing from somewhee into the rear footwell. Any ideas?
