Dreaded Reversing Sensor Failure.

Featured Replies

Well, it had to happen eventually. I now get a continuous beep while reverse is engaged. Providing it isn't an MOT failure, I'm tempted to disconnect the buzzer. Anyone know where the buzzer is hidden? Thanks.

Fred the control module is on the right side rear panel and the buzzer is under the parcel shelf if u get someone to engage reverse and just **** an ear it is easy enough to locate rather that replace the sensor it is just as easy to replace the complete system and a lot less expensive the same buzzer does and if you measure the head size of the sensors and replace with similar size it's an easy enough diy job

Thanks for the info, I'll take a look at the weekend. I'm not keen to replace a sensor due to the cost and I expect the other three will be failing soon enough anyway so that would make it an expensive job. (How cute, I think the board software censored your post!).

I think this morning the sensors have completely failed. All this week, when reverse is engaged I have had a continuous version of the tone that sounds when you are reversing and get close to something. This morning when reverse was engaged, a loud very high pitched tone that sounded for a couple seconds and now all has gone quiet. I think it's blown up! Oh well......

I've got the same problem. 1 loud beep and then nothing....

But I will go the garage over 2 -3 weeks and I will tell you the results.

I have same problem and starting to drive me mad. Read on a previous thread to listen for static from the sensor when in reverse (static means working).... is this true. 2 on passanger side have static, 2 on driver side dont. Havent got a chance to do a proper investigation yet due to lack of daylight and lack of dry weather. Will check wiring/connections over weekend hopfully. If sensor does need replacing;

1. Can you replace the one(s) that are not working or do they all need to come out. I am guessing just a partial replacement.

2. Can you wire the replacements into the existing control box.

3. Does the bumper need to come off to do it (I have 2004 model)

Thanks

To be honest, I'm not throwing money at this, I will just disconnect the beeper if it drives me potty. The way I look at it is if I replace one sensor, the other three will be on borrowed time.

One duff sensor will cause this. They are expensive but come up on Ebay from time to time. I just replaced one for less than £30. They are dead easy to replace and you don't have to take the bumper off. I can replace one in less than a minute but the first time I did it, it took a lot longer. Once you know how they are fitted you can literally do it with your eyes shut. The one on the right hand side involves removing a small rear undertray but the other three are easily accessible.

My advice for what its worth is bite the bullet and put in a decent set from ebay or a motor factors the original ones were made by gombeans with no idea what they were at and by buying replacement ones only encourages them to stay in business

For those that dont know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gombeen.

I must get another set of sensors from fleabay, anybody know what size the originals are?

The parking sensors seems to be a real problem in the SUPER MK 1. Is there someone who has made a picture how to remove, so we know how to find back the clips and so on. Because if this is happens so much, I dont wanna remove the rear bumper each time.

Is this also a known problem in the passat B5, if not. I prefer to install sensor of the passat...

Many thanks,

Michael

Read here what to do to avoid this problem in future.

I asked my local VW dealer about sensors from a Passat B5 - they said they were cheaper (£80) than Skoda (just been quoted £120 :o!! )but that they were a different shape from the Skoda ones. I'm sure there must be a sensor used in other VW, SEAT, Audi models that are the same.

They also said they weren't aware of a problem with sensors - but then they would say that, wouldn't they... :smirk:

Hey,

The parking sensors are realy strange. I've got this problem also. It started a month ago, and then after 1 day the sensors refused to work.

So just 1 long beep when reversing and then nothing....

NOW SINCE FRIDAY THEY WORK AGAIN,JUST LIKE NEW!!!!!!! AND I DIDN'T TOUCH IT. And for testing I hand washed my car yesterdag to see if water has an influence on the sensors.. But it's still working fine. So 1 month DEAD, and now working fine again.

I believe that it has something to do with condensation or water inside the sensor and when it's dried op they work again....

So try to dry with some hairdryer on the sensor and on the backside above the bumber bar....

I hope it's work. LET ME KNOW PLEASE!!!

Mine work about 1/3rd of the time. Only a matter of time before they fail completely I think.
