Rear Spring Replacement?

Featured Replies

Dear Forum List,

Any guides or "how to's" for a rear spring replacement for a Fabia, and particularly an SDi? I'm guessing they are all pretty similar. Also best place to get replacement springs? Just had them on an advisory on the MOT today. Need to do them over the coming warmer months ahead but just want to get an idea of what I'm up against.

TIA

Nick

looks quite easy from what i can see under the car.

1) Jack up the rear, take the rear wheels off.

2) Undo the bottom of the rear dampers.

3) The spring should be loose.

4) Refitting in reverse.

Found this wee guide to doing the polo... can't be too far off. here

Just make sure you do NOT jack the rear up on the rear subframe cross beam. Jobs a doddle, 20 minutes a side at most.

Great stuff. thanks for the replies. I realised I had a PDF of Skoda Tech manual for the Fabia and had a look at that. Scared me senseless! They wanted to remove rear silencer, use proper VAG spring compressors with surface protection coating etc etc!

I knew it must be easier than that! I see they are not around the damper as per my previous Golfs etc but alongside. I guess there are top and bottom mounts welded to the body and the rear arm respectively. Any treatment necessary for these? Clean up and a coating of grease? Or paint with a primer? Also, new bolt for lower damper mount? Any ideas of part number for this?

Spring seatings are pretty much well covered with heavy duty anti rust sealant. Bottom one benefits from some waxoil to prevent creaking. Using spring compressors negates the need to remove lower damper mounting bolt, but that's all. Be careful not to stretch the flexi brake hoses by dropping the rear subframe too far. I don't have the part number for the lower bolt, but any Skoda parts department will know what you want for sure.

Two final words: Axle Stands

I was told rightly or wrongly there are round dabs of different coloured paint on rear springs.

These represented that type spring for that type model of car.

As I wanted one for my 2005 Fabia VRS as a replacement as the tip broke off

the coil spring and failed the MOT test.

Mine was 2 White + 1 Blue + 1 Orange spots of paint.

May I add they were not purchased from Skoda dealership.

Just in case you get to this point and are stumped, I changed the rear beam on mine this evening. The way i found easiest to get the springs and dampers back on was to bolt the dampers in at the top, then seat the springs in the bottom mounts, jack up the beam a wee bit underneath the bottom spring mount. Just enough so the top of the spring nearly seats, so he just about can't pop out, then nip round the other side, make sure this one is seating properly too, then away to go, jack it up a bit more, bolt the bottom of the damper in, let him down, pop round t'other side again, jack him up a bit, pop the bottom damper bolt in, tighten the lot up, job done.

It'd be easier with two of you but i was by myself so had to keep popping back and forth from one side to the other every now and then.

Just to put your mind at rest giandougl, I just put 55 plate vrs springs on and they are orange, blue, white as well.
