Insurance Companies. Their Admin Charge.....

Featured Replies

Just to ask how others feel about it when you get charged, in my case, £25 to change your registration number over (from, say, a personal plate to the regular plate - or vice versa)).

I accept some charging is acceptable for some changes ie. additional risks and, yes it does take some time to alter the computer records and they have to email the MID database and post you fresh documentation and you might think that is worth whatever they charge. I think a tenner isn't unreasonable but £25 and over is a bit heavy. I've told them I won't be renewing with them if they continue with the charge (whether I do or not depends on their renewal premium, obviously enough)...but I feel it's no good muttering to myself and not complaining to them...so I did.

£25 is a rip off but you are left with little choice other than to go elsewhere. They all charge it, it is pure profit for them. They will tell you it is required to cover admin costs but if it really costs them that much for 5 minutes work then they either employ incompetent staff or hugely over pay them. The real cost to them is probably about £3 at most. I agree that I would also accept £10 as a token amount that is fair, not £25.

This argument is very similar to the bank charges one. Many of the banks took to accepting £10 as a "fair amount" and it does seem to have become more like the figure of the future.

You shouldn't have to pay for a change of plate as it is not a material change ie, one that would affect the calculation of premium. All they will have done is change the reg no. on their records and new documents would have been printed automatically. The MID is updated automatically by a data run, so no manual intervention required.

I recently changed my plate on my BMW prior to selling it and my insurer didn't charge me a penny.

I used to work in insurance and I can honestly say that a change of reg no was one of the few amendments that didn't attract an additional premium.

Are you insured via a broker? It's just that many of them levy a fee and then blame it on the insurer, that used to lead to some very interesting conversations!

I would complain if I were you, if they continue to get away with it, they'll continue to charge.

I work for My insurance company and I still get charged an admin fee!!

If it's in their policy you have no choice, you have to pay or leave, complaining won't help as they would have told you about this fee at some point, either verbally or by letter.

Most industries have admin fess.. god forbid you ever have to use a solicitor!

Sorry about the delay....my post got moved from Yeti (where I guess it shouldn't have been - accept slapped wrist) to here and I only just found it.

I'm insured with Bradford and Bingley - a broker, albeit pretty OK with me regarding answering the phone and having an office in the UK, where I can understand them. Their premium was fair so I guess it's just their way of making a little out of me.

I did complain to a supervisor, who said what you would expect him to say - no more no less.....he heard what I said but it's company policy and everyone else does it etc, etc,.......

Thanks for replies anyway.

Does SKY charge £25 to change the reg. no. over?

I'll look at the website and get a quote for the forthcoming Yeti
