Climatic --> Climatronic

Hi

Is it possible to change my current aircon panel system (image below)

skoda_laura_classic_dash_1.jpg

To this system with just swapping the control panels? ( or is there more to it, then please explain )

Greetings

No. Not a straight swap. The system you have doesn't have dual zone, whereas the new one would. And you'd need to install the extra flaps and motors etc behind the scenes, to make the new system work properly. It's not cost effective, by any means.

What's your reason for wanting to change anyway?

The last time this subject was raised there were costs in excess of £2k+ (or poss even £4k, either way, prohibitively expensive) bandied around. Seems you need to change a huge amount of stuff behind the dashboard, and then change a lot of the air ducting channels to allow for the separate driver/passenger controls.

Well just wanted to know if it was an easy task to switch the panel , if it used the rest of the old system, but yeah havent thaught about the dual ventilation system, maybee i kinda had hoped that the current system was able to handle the new system without anybig changes if the current fan system allready was able of suporting the new panel.

No problem. You did ask for an explanation, if the answer was a no :)

Is the panel in the first image from a FL Octavia? I have non climate control system in my pre-FL car which has the old dials, the controls in the first image look a lot better.

John

Yes, that's the 'basic' panel from the FL.

I'm wondering if it's possible to put that one in my car but so far I can't even find it for sale which is not a good start.

John

How about changing the climatronic preFL control panel with a FL version?

Is it a straight swap or not?

This might be easier, as it's already a dual-zone climate setup. But the shape of old one is not the same as FL, you will need a a different fascia surround.

Still apart from cosmetic looks, the purpose is the same and it wont cool your car any better!

On the other hand, swapping the climatic panel from old to new would be much more of an improvement:

So, would this be a straight swap, then? Although I should think at least the leds would have to be modified to green....

That can be done, I have done that in my Mk5 golf

Remove the wire from pin 16 and join to pin 20 (wire on pin 20 needs to be cut,

join the wire from pin 16 to the part left in the climate panel)

On the other hand, swapping the climatic panel from old to new would be much more of an improvement:

I don't see that swapping 'old' for 'new' would give any additional functionality or performance, only a change of look!

Or am I mistaken?

No added performance but I think the new one looks much better than the old one, I actually prefer not having climate control but never liked the look of the dials which were the same in my first Octavia over ten years ago.

John

Yeah, what John said. Even just aesthetically it'd be a significant improvement. Wonder just how feasible it is?

If it's just replacing the unit and fascia I'd be sorely tempted.

Was wondering about the retrofit, but you've answered my question. Thanks

Also recognise your username from over on Mk5GTI

I originally wondered if it mattered about controller changes on the FL, but obviously not. Seems a pre-FL can understand the FL unit just fine.

Cheers,

So, do you think swapping the climatic panel from old to new would be possible? it is a big look improvement.

I compared the two panels, the dimension and hole position are similar.

I wonder if it involves more than just replacing the panels and the surrounding frame??

Climatic might well be more straightforward to convert to the latest panel, but it might still require a new module to control. Only one way to find out really :)

Another would be to compare module versions with your car and an FL with Climatic fitted, by taking a full VCDS scan of each car. But you'd still have to experiment to see if the newer panel would work the module fitted to your car.

Swapping the manual controls to the auto climatronic one will work on a FL octavia? i really dont care about the dual zones, just want the auto settings..

Thanks..

Send RickST170 a PM

he has the panel from his blackline

It CAN be done, did mine over 2 days, and its a lot better than the single zone.

You will need; dual zone heater box, controller, jumbo box optional the wiring will need swapping over, use existing plug.

The dash board comes out then you will see it,there is one bolt that's a bit of a pig to get at but its do able. Not a problem to me as Im a mechanic any way.

Happy with the result you bet.

I wil help you if req,I have pics too if you want some pm me your email and I will send some.

Trev

Hi Aston, I already have dual zone climate, jumbo box etc.. so not sure what you mean?? surely I just need to change the panel over, change the pin20/16 bit, and poss perform a reset? maybe VCDS mod?

Thanks Eddie, ill send him a PM now..

That's if you don't already have Dual Zone - much more difficult to do.

Yes, the steps you list are what's required to go from the older style dual zone panel, to the newer FL version.
