It's not unusual for the fan to stay on for a while. or it could be with the burning smell that your DPF was doing a regen.

Its the DPF regen. Mine did the same thing today. My wife thought something had caught fire!

No need to, it will sort itself. But if your normal driving is many short trips, an occasional longer trip at some speed will liven it up a bit.

Hi thanks ........yea ive not really done a longish trip for a couple a weeks now ive just been going up and down from the shops............a mind the sales rep at the skoda dealers said if you ever see the light show up dont worry its just the exhaust needing a clean (a bit of a blast) ......... im back at work tomorrow so ill be doing more miles.........

The DPF side of owning a diesel put me off as you hear some horror stories if you don't follow

the general rules of ensuring they run properly. Continuous short trips are a killer.

I though 'oh well if it is just an extra filter change at risk ..no problem'

But it appears they are not like 'oil filters' in replacement cost...£800 was mentioned at one dealer!!

Couldn't put up with the filter dictating how I used the car and again not cost effective for 10k/year driver.

Without wishing to reopen old arguments, it really does seem that unless drivers make an extraordinary number of extraordinarily short journeys over an extraordinarily extended period of time, there is no problem with DPFs: there is no need to scare people!

I have done about 3980 miles now in a fraction over 2 months. Apart from a trip up to Scotland of 1250 miles and a trip to Ben at Shark of 430 miles and this weekend to oxfordshire of about 200 miles, all my trips have been driving around London.....

Occasionally the DPF goes into a regen, with the lovely smell. As a general rule my trips around London last an hour or more at a time, even if they aren't very far! I'm not really worried about the DPF.

Not trying to scare. Just best to know they are not necessarily trouble free and the implications if you get

into trouble.

Not all cars are the same, a Renault dealer wouldn't sell me a diesel when I described my driving pattern.

'You will be limping in for a forced regeneration on a regular basis' was his comment.

Yes if the DPF light is constantly on and you have followed the guide in the manual on how to clear it, then proceed to your dealer ASAP.

Mattytun, I think this is the first time I've heard the DPF actually needing dealer regen. What type of driving do you generally do, I assume generally short trips but with any long blasts (before the light came on)? It could simply be a faulty component of course but it would be really handy to know if this is something we should start to look out for.

Feedback from the dealer with regard to whether is is driving 'style' or faulty component would be gratefully received.

Good luck!

Rockhopper - I agree with you entirely, my Better 3/4 has a Mini Cooper D with a DPF, she has driven some 24000 miles over 2 years, most of it local runs for her job. We have had absolutely no issues whatsoever, it has not influenced how she drives the vehicle at all, in fact, the first time I heard about these "So Called" problems were in these very forums. The only thing that grabs my intention is the stunning shiny interior of the tailpipe, which proves to me how efficient these devices are and what a valuable contribution they play in improving our environment.

Sounds like you've gone into limp mode, if drivable and not far to the dealer would advise going there ASAP or call out Skoda Assist. suprised dealer did not get you book in fairly sharpish with the DPF light on.
