Thinking of doing an oil change on my 2.0 TDI PD 4X4 myself. Can anyone tell me if its necessary to remove protective sump cover completely or is there an aperture where you can reach the drain plug?

Needs to come off, and it's bleeding heavy..

You can get a suction pump where you feed a pipe down through the oil level dipstick tube and suck the engine oil out.

This would not however drain the sump as much as removing the sump plug. (Arguable point as follows)

It would speed the whole job up though and save crawling around underneath the car.

I would disagree on this point. I have said device and it works a dream. Never have I removed so much oil with so little effort. You can 'fish about' with the end of the tube and believe me what you wont get out will be about 1/2 eggcup full. Also, you can properly drain the oil filter housing and this contains at least another 300ml of oil, so in fact you can remove more oil with the suction method than the drain and drip approach. Also means you dont get half as dirty and can do it more often (2x a year) as it is so easy.

Depends on what engine you have on the suction front, some of them don't allow you to suck it all up depending on how the sump is arranged with regards to baffles/windage.

Mines a BKD and have no probs getting the specified amount of oil back in 3.8 ltrs I know this because I fill a litre bottle with the remains of the 5ltr bottle I have and resent sending the unused cupful to the recycling centre with the used stuff.

Anyway, it's all pretty academic as it is better to do oil changes more often than not and if this system makes it easier for the DIY then you can afford to do it more often than not and thats a good thing. I use the pump to do 2x oil changes a year for mine, my wifes and a mates car so the saving has more than paid for the pump.

Would work on the cr engines sump?

Another vote for the Pela here. I managed to get about 0.5L more oil than the stated capacity from my 1.8TSi, and it wasn't overfilled.

I've also used it on a friend Golf TDi and I worked well, so I think its likely it will work on most engines.

If you go for removing the sump guard, stick a trolley jack under the centre of it to support the weight when unbolting it. If you drive off road it's worth removing so you can empty the mud and grit out - it get's in through the vents in the guard.
